Twice in every passing year,

Man becomes acutely aware,

That time, which always passes away,

Has brought an unusual day.


One is the eve of a new year

More forcibly pressing as it draws near,

Twenty-nine – thirty – now thirty-one

December’s gone; January begun.


The other point in every year

The day upon which alertness is clear

Is the day he commemorates his birth

A milestone, marking his passage on earth.

“The statement that God is dead comes from Nietzsche

and has recently been trumpeted abroad by some German and American theologians.

But the good Lord has not died of this; He who dwells in the heaven laughs at them.”

Karl Barth on this date, 2/24/1967, is said to have written the above in a letter.  One may not agree with all this Swiss Reformed theologian said/wrote but there is surely truth here – God is not dead, He is not even sick.

Barth was born 5/10/1886 at Basel, Switzerland and died there 12/10/1968.
