Twice in every passing year,
Man becomes acutely aware,
That time, which always passes away,
Has brought an unusual day.
One is the eve of a new year
More forcibly pressing as it draws near,
Twenty-nine – thirty – now thirty-one
December’s gone; January begun.
The other point in every year
The day upon which alertness is clear
Is the day he commemorates his birth
A milestone, marking his passage on earth.
