A youth to Fortune and to Fame unknown.
Fair Science frowned not on his humble birth,

He gained from Heaven (’twas all he wish’d) a friend.

No farther seek his merits to disclose,
Or draw his frailties from their dread abode
(There they alike in trembling hope repose),
The bosom of his Father and his God.

Thomas Gray, on this date, 2/16/1751, published “Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard.” Gray was born 12/26/1716, at London, and passed from this life 7/30/1771, at Cambridge.
