When you walk Toward Light,

you walk AWAY from your shadow.

When you walk AWAY from Light,

you walk into your shadow.

It matters not the long valley

From which your family hailed,

Nor the salty ship, on ocean lip

In which that family sailed.

It matters not about their grub

Rhubarb or roastin’ ears,

Nor if their shack, was by an old track

In Greek-Roman suburb.

It matters not if long they stood

By slowly sifting sands,

Nor if their soul, was close to a pole

In frozen, far white lands.

Were they “bad” warriors (I hope not)

Who have shed angry blood?

Were they worshipper, (not much better)

Whose sword raised a small flood?

Were they farmers who knew the smell

Of soil newly turned?

Or bakers whose bread, the hungry fed,

Light brown, but never burned.

Did they know an ancient wisdom:

Parables and proverb?

Or did they just spurn, such light to learn,

Adjective, noun or verb.

Did your family? – ah, there’s no lack.

Diversification,

None mattering, not a single thing,

If they missed salvation.

Brag not of where your family’s been:

Valley, plain or high slope,

If they fled or felt, the angry welt

Of gen’ral or of pope.

Did family know here below

The Lord in His glory?

OH, if they knew, the One the Jews slew,

Tell, tell ALL their story.

Love divine, so great and wondrous,
Deep and mighty, pure, sublime!
Coming from the heart of Jesus,
Just the same through tests of time.

Refrain

He the pearly gates will open,
So that I may enter in;
For He purchased my redemption
And forgave me all my sin.

2. Like a dove when hunted, frightened,
As a wounded fawn was I;
Brokenhearted, yet He healed me,
He will heed the sinner’s cry.

3. Love divine, so great and wondrous,
All my sins He then forgave!
I will sing His praise forever,
For His blood, His power to save.

4. In life’s eventide, at twilight,
At His door I’ll knock and wait;
By the precious love of Jesus
I shall enter Heaven’s gate.

Commencement – a beginning of service I trust.

Or will you be, the one to see

Material gain as a must?

Gain in realm of fame of name,

Or pounds of finest gold dust.

Will you be the one, to hinder the Son,

And sit or lie as time goes by

And millions are born and millions die,

And souls are seen, as birds, to fly,

While the church thinks of Me, Mine, and My.

Commencement – a beginning of what?

A beginning of service – I trust!

Your approval rating with man,

Might be great, might be bland.

But when you go below the sod

What counts?  Your approval rating with God.

Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee;
take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love;
take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King;
take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee.

Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold;
take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.

Take my will and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine.
take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure store;
take my self, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.

Henri A. C. Malan died this date,5/18/1864, at Vandoeuvres (near Geneva) Switzerland. He wrote the music to the well-known song above.

Malan (may also be seen as “Cesar H. A.”) finished his studies and traveled to Marseilles, France, to learn business.  God had other plans for him; soon he entered the Academy at Geneva.  Here he prepared to enter the ministry (was ordained, 1810) having been made a master at the College in 1809.  He has the distinction of being an originator of the “hymn movement” in the French Reformed Church.

Malan also has the distinction of saying to a young lady named Charlotte Elliott that he hoped she was a Christian.  (It was on a visit to England where God allowed this evangelist to be seated at the same table.)  She bristled and let him know she did not wish to discuss his question.  Henri Malan apologized, expressing he did not wish to give offense.  Though offended, it became a turning point for Charlotte and, as known, she became a beleiver in Christ.

In addition to his musical abilities, Malan penned a number of tracts and pamphlets.  This musician, artist, and mechanic (suggesting cleaver use of hands) was born July 7, 1787 at Geneva,Switzerland.
