ON THIS DAY

Michael Faraday was born 9/22/1791 at Newington, England. He was raised in poverty (father was an impoverished blacksmith) and while quite young went to work.   While binding books he read an article by Sir Humphrey Davey and that inspired him to seek a position as Davey’s assistant.  In chemistry Faraday discovered benzene.  His discoveries in electro-magnetism were greater – discovering electromagnetic induction, the principle behind the electric transformer, and the generator, and the Faraday cage.

Less well-known is Faraday’s deep faith in Jesus Christ.  He made his confession at 29 and to become a Presbyterian preacher after he was elected an elder of his church (age 48).  Faraday died 8/25/1867.  A biographer stated “a strong sense of the unity of God and nature pervaded Faraday’s life and work.”
