ON THIS DATE
Philip Paul Bliss died 12/29/1876 in railroad accident near Ashtabula, OH. – train in which he and his wife were riding plunged off a bridge into a ravine 60 feet below. Bliss is said to have survived the fall but returned to the wreckage to rescue his wife and perished with her in the fire. Neither body was recognizable after the fire. He was 38. He gave us such favorites as:
“Wonderful Words of Life” “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning” “I Gave My Life for Thee” “Almost Persuaded” “My Redeemer” “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning” “Jesus Loves Even Me” “Almost Persuaded” “Hallelujah, What a Savior” “The Light of the World Is Jesus” “I Gave My Life for Thee.” Bliss was born 7/9/1838 near Rome, PA.
His trunk survived the crash and fire. In it was the manuscript to another great whose music was written by James McGranahan. And it became one of the first songs recorded by Thomas Alva Edison, the song? “I Will Sing of My Redeemer.”
Standing by a purpose true, Heeding God’s command,
Honor them, the faithful few! All hail to Daniel’s band!
Refrain
Dare to be a Daniel, Dare to stand alone!
Dare to have a purpose firm! Dare to make it known.
