ON THIS DATE
Robert Sayers Sheffey 1/9/1839 came under the convicting power of the Holy Ghost in a revival meeting (held over a store by a circuit riding Methodist preacher) and was converted to Christ in Abingdon, VA. He eventually became a “free-lance” Methodist riding preacher himself ,“Brother Sheffey.” His circuit came to cover some 14 mountain counties in VA and WV.
He was born 7/4/1820 near Ivanhoe, Wythe Co. and (following the death of his mother) was raised by an aunt in Abingdon. She did not agree with his conversion and shortly afterward he left. She (near death) felt a need for reconcilation with him. The famous “sheepskin” upon which he often prayed was a gift from her. He died in 8/30/1902 in Staffordsville, Giles County, Virginia, in the community of Trigg. In between his birth and death, he had a very interesting life.
