Many a preacher’s boy

Has been led by the devil astray,

Stumbled down the wrong path

Further and further away,

Sampled sin a little and then a lot,

Until dad’s God was almost forgot,

But God changed all that

When He found a saint that would pray.

Jacob Albright (Christened Johannes Jacob Albrecht) was born (1 of 9) on a farm in the Fox Mountain Region, northwest of Pottstown, Pa., 5/1/1759 to Johannes & Anna Albrecht, who had arrived at Philadelphia, September 1732 from Germany.  His early education included the Bible & the Lutheran catechism (in German). Early on he was known to be punctual & to be honest.

In 1785 Jacob Albright married Catherine Cope & they moved onto 63-acre farm near Ephrata where he farmed & also made roofing tiles.  Three children lived to mature: Sarah, Jacob, & David. Other children died of dysentery (1790) which helped him to start his search for “personal salvation.”  He visited Adam Riegel (lay preacher for the United Brethren in Christ) & in July 1791, Albright received “genuine conversion experience” & life was never the same after that.

Jacob was definitely attracted to the Methodists & their disciplined life. However Francis Asbury, the Methodist Bishop, did not encourage the burden which he & others (Martin Boehm & Wilhelm Otterbein) felt to reach out to the German speaking “Pennsylvania Dutch” which surrounded them. Boehm & Otterbein started what became the United Brethren in Christ Church & Jacob Albright (through many trials & physical mistreatments) started the Evangelical Association. One of his followers said of Albright, “The wisdom coming from above glowed in his face.” He died 5/17/1808.
