The battle of the Kingdoms

Is fought every day –

On some bleak mountain

Or odd island far away?

No, it’s fought in the grayish matter

Of your brain

The kingdom of evil

Fights to claim you.

The Kingdom of Christ

Fights to re-claim you.

Your will, your heart,

Your brain’s the battle field,

You, Friend, decide the battle

As you hold or as you yield.

ON THIS DATE

Joseph Hart died 5/24/1768 at London, England.  Neither an exact date of birth, nor parental names seem readily available but his autobiography states he “…had the happiness of being born of believing parents…”  He received a good education including a mastery of Latin, Hebrew, & Greek & later (on the word of his brother-n-law, John Hughes) made part of his living teaching languages.

Sadly while still young, left his Christian roots actually penning a pamphlet The Unreasonableness of Religion, Being Remarks and Animadversions on the Rev. John Wesley’s Sermon on Romans 8:32.  (After his conversion to Christ he publicly acknowledged his error).  Sometime during his rebellious/struggling years he met & married Mary (?) who is said to have been 14 years younger than he was – date is missing.

The week before the commemoration of our Lord’s Resurrection (April 10th in 1757) Hart received “…an amazing view of the agony of Christ in the garden of Gethsemane…” & on Whitsunday (what the Brits call “Pentecost Sunday” – i.e. TODAY) Hart was converted to Christ under the preaching of George Whitfield.  He eventually became the Minister of the Independent Chapel on Jewin Street in London.  He left behind 30 some hymns in addion to his other publicaions.  Tens of thousands reportedly attended his funeral.

His motto “Pharasaic zeel & Antinomian security are the two engines of satan, with which he grinds the church in all ages…

The space between them is much narrower & harder to find than most men imagine.

It is a path which the vulture’s eye hath not seen; & none can show it us but the Holy Ghost.”
