Word

“Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:”

Rom 1.25-26

Solomon wrote “of making many books there is no end &

much study is a weariness of the flesh” (Ecc 12.12).

Happy Contrast – God made a Book which has no end (Mark 13.31) &

the study of the Bible is refreshment to the Soul.

PIANO

PIANO *

Something there is that loves a piano,

Tinkling in the tenor, booming in the bass,

Sliding with the thumbnail,

In its pink-on-white race.

* No instrument pleases my ear better & God was so good as to give us two daughters who play the piano beautifully.

ON THIS DATE

Philip Doddridge was born 6/26/1702, London, 20th child of Daniel/Elizabeth Doddridge & was laid aside as still-born. Before he could read his mother was teaching him about the OT & NT from the blue, Dutch, chimney sitting-room tiles. Elizabeth died when he was 8, Daniel when he was 13. Thankfully Dr. Samuel Clark became a friend (“second father”), helped to educate, & influenced toward the Nonconformists.

On 12/22 he married Mercy Maris 1730 at Upton upon Severn.  She was the daughter of Robert Maris, a baker & his second wife Elizabeth Brindley. This union was blessed with 9 children. He continued teaching (lectured as high as 200 students) & preaching. Aberdeen U. gave him a Doctor of Divinity 1736.

In addition to his 400 hymns he penned a New Testament commentary & his famous Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul.  This book was translated into 7 languages, was instrumental in the conversion of William Wilberforce (great abolitionist), & Spurgeon simply called it “that holy book.”  He had poor health & went to Portugal for improvement – alas he died of tuberculosis at Lisbon 10/26/1751.

A personal note – I suppose I had sung “O Happy Day” several times with the congregation before seeing/hearing Bro Howard Williams (Mrs Garry Spriggs’ father) sing it.  But many times since when I have sung it, I “see” Bro. Williams putting all he had into it, as a special song.

O happy day, that fixed my choice On Thee, my Savior and my God!

Well may this glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad.

Refrain

Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray,

and live rejoicing every day Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away.
