The Word

Bunyan quote

“Then I saw that there was a way to hell even from the gates of heaven as well as from the city of Destruction.

So I awoke and behold it was a dream.”

– John Bunyan, from his PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

Love – Hate

You can hate the devil for all his terrible actions against mankind (he is the source of Adultery, Divorce, Fornication, Lying, Murder and War) without loving God but you c-a-n-n-o-t love God without hating the devil.

MODERNISM

The road to modernism bends,

But slightly left of right.

So slightly, in fact, that the same scenes,

Appear to casual sight.

2

Then a little farther it veers,

(‘Tis only but a little.)

As when a peg, almost fits, the hole;

A little pressure, a gentle whittle.

3

The path now gently curves some more,

You hardly tell the turning,

ALMOST everything you still stand for,

You know the same yearning.

4

An ever-growing curve it is,

This road to left of right.

The curve gets tighter as you watch

The “prospects” seem so bright.

5

…           it is a curve [1]

…           with most traveling men

…           seemed just left of right

…           simple way in sin, sad sin.

Mr. “F” never married, wanted to but was jilted,

or she died before the date set, or he was afraid to marry, etc. Is he destined to be “lonely” forever in heaven? Miss “G” never married. In some cases she felt she should not. In other cases she was “married” to her one-room school or her mission field or caring for her invalid relative. Will she feel that she is an unclaimed blessing for eternity? Mrs. “H” was happily married, died fairly young and went to heaven. Later (if time matters at all up there J) her “husband” (if we’ll even recognize a former companion in heaven?) enters heaven. Still later a second Mrs. “H” (her husband’s second legitimate mate) also enters heaven. (To our minds, in our present circumstances this could pose a problem. God will have answers.) Or Mr. “I” is married two/three times legitimately and at least one or two of his wives were also married before they married him.

As the late Paul Harvey was wont to say, “Let me tell you more than I know.” We tend to see heaven as a better, bigger more blest version of earth and maybe in some ways it will be but there must be major shifts in “personhood” between here and there.
