Addendum – RAISED GARDEN BEDS. I suggested ways to fill a 2’ high bed but failed to say you do NOT want the dirt level with the top. After I have a bed ready in the spring I remove a full shovel of the dirt (can use it for a dike to hold the water later) and in the hole I place black soil which my new plant will reach first. Also the spring of the 2nd yr you’ll need to work up the ground (turning it with a spade, potato fork, hoe) and if too full, it will spill out wasting soil. Raised beds are a pleasure, up where they are easier to work, they need less water, and it’s “almost” 🙂 fun to reach over and pull that weed. Almost.
