Role model

Once upon a time a lad had a role model in his dad, an uncle, grandpa, the farmer next door, the parson, a blacksmith, etc. Today, too many boys are in a mother-led family or one with a “step-dad.” Consequently too many are finding “role models” in actors, singers, and sports characters some of whom are less than 100% manly and few do man’s labor or create a machine, a building, a farm – they are not worth imitating. (Even some pastors are less masculine than desirable.) If you’re a man and God has arranged life so that a boy is watching you, do all in your power (pray for wisdom) to not fail. We need all our boys to grow up to be men!

STOP! Do Not Commit Suicide! You have no right to take your life any more than I have a right to kill you. God, the Maker of heaven & earth, allowed your life to begin, therefore He (& He alone) has the right to bring it to an end. Honor God enough to allow Him the right that is His. Pray. He can give you grace for the thing you think you cannot do.

TEMPLE TALK

He went into the temple

Where you’d think one could look up

But his attitude was humble;

He saw dregs in his cup.

2

He asked God for mercy;

He beat upon his chest,

Called himself a sinner

(Not better than the rest).

3

He cast his eyes downward,

They sought the lowly ground,

But God who measures all things,

The simple, the profound,

4

Liked his honest spirit,

Heard his call and cry

Knew he meant his temple-talk,

Knew it more than “humble pie,”

5

And justified his soul;

He went back to his own place

With a calm in his heart

And heaven’s smile upon his face.

6

Friend, the next time you go to meeting,

The next time you’re in church

Avoid petty piousness,

Avoid the highest perch,

7

Look at God, worship Him

And see yourself contrasted,

As this man of old, did.

His grace has ever-lasted.

Don’t let anyone make out YOUR list

of spiritual heroes. Not your college, not your denomination, not your camp/convention. Think for yourself. Think about what they have said. Think about what they have not said (did they preach/teach the “whole counsel of God”?) Be Berean (Act 17.10-11). Some men are not worthy being in YOUR hero list. Finally – did their life match their proclamations? A paper (printed or from which a sermon is made) is easy to write – daily discipline decade by decade is harder to maintain.
