Psa 139.23-24

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

“And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

You have a favorite uncle (for now let’s call him “Uncle S”). As a kid you loved his stories of adventure, exploring when young, admired him telling of fights he’d won. As you matured you loved him but also saw he wasn’t a 100% truthful, had bad habits, misused money. The day came you met Christ. Now “Uncle S” was seen in a new light. Loved him? More than ever – but now you saw what a bad guy he was & needed to change. Christians – don’t love “Uncle Sam” so much you approve of all the fights(wars) he’s been in or his money problems or… You can love America (I truly do) but not love war upon war. Pray for USA.

“Are you dressing to conceal or reveal.”

– Lincoln S. Bryan, conversation, 1/23/00

I feel sorry for youth whose church (local or denomination) is moving left. Ideals/activities your parents would’ve never do are being ignored (as supposedly neutral) or are actually encouraged. Youth – read your Bible, daily. Read it literally. Talk to Jesus as your best Friend. Open your heart to Him about all that is being allowed by youth/regular pastor. Not all new things are automatically sinful but time after time satan uses the new to detract from a close walk with the Lord. You don’t have to join the leftward drift.

Tinkling in the tenor, booming in the bass,

Sliding with the thumbnail,

In its pink-on-white race.

Jam 4.14b

“For what is your life? It is even a vapor,

that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

*How to sucker tomatoes.* Imagine the main stem as an index finger (sticking straight up). See a leaf as a thumb going at an angle. Suckers start in the spot where finger & thumb meet. You don’t want them. When the sucker is small pinch it off with fingernails. If bigger suckers use a pair of sharp-nosed scissors being careful to not injure main stem or leaf. The small secondary stem (which has the blossom & later the tomato) doesn’t come off in the index finger/thumb crotch but a higher up on the main stem. Learned from f-n-l, the late Carson W Scarbrough. BTW sucker pepper plants & eggplants the same way for bigger fruit.

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.

He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth…”

You had no choice about who your dad was. Some would have chosen such a nice man. Some, sadly had a “dad” who deposited a seed & left. In between there’s a spectrum of “good” & bad dads. Father God can be your Father & you DO have a choice here. In fact, a choice is required – a responding choice. He has chosen you & me. We can, in return, choose Him – or, heaven forbid choose His arch enemy, satan.

We’ve been lead to believe computers (“number crunchers”) are great &, in a sense, they are (I’ve had a PC since ’85). Never, however allow any man-made tool to fool you into thinking it in-the-slightest compares to God. Computers, though they dazzle (speed, storage, screen gizmos) only have what is put into them. How primitive! Mankind is better than that, let alone God, who Created man. God knows every fact about every person in your county, in your country, in your continent. That’s just the start of His knowledge.

YOUR YARD (not mine) J

You want a yard with grass

Where each blade is just like its neighbor?

To make it look so, you dig and spray

And bestow much spring labor.

Mine? Oh, mine is a hodge-podge

Of what volunteers to grow

If it wants in my yard, I let it lodge.

It’s a country-cottage “lawn” I know.

At times a dandelion shines its sunny head

While another grows near-by

Soon they seem to own the patch

But they’ll pass on “bye-n-bye.”

I have what some call a weed

(Watch what you say, Mr Carver may hear)

A plantain pops up his tall head

And another and another one near.

These also pass and every here and there

I see the lovely white blossom in the shade

Of clover in my variegated yard

But your lawn (where blade matches blade)

Is like some much uniform samesh flooring

A monotonous, repetitive turf. How boring. J

Mar 13.24

“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and

the moon shall not give her light.”

Who said it? – The Creator, God

What was said? – The moon is its own light

Where was it said? – Gen 1.16b, Isa 13.10 & 30.26 & 60.19, Eze 32.7, Mat 24.29, Mar 13.24

When did He say it? – Before “oppositions of science falsely so called” (1Ti 6.20) cooked up theories

Why was it said? – Because it is True  – eab, 6/15/18

– Wilfred Grenfell, MD

If you could’ve chosen your dad would he’ve been smart? Strong? Able to do anything – I mean anything? Would he have been good? A great provider? Would he . . .You CAN chose your heavenly Father. “Smart” is too colloquial a word – God is All Wise. God, the Father is Powerful. The Father above can do AND has done anything / everything (except where He chooses to limit Himself i.e. not remembering our sins). He provides all we need & is GOOD. And He can be your Father God if you’ll believe & obey.

“…Carnal worry involves my integrity as a holy man;

it disconnects me from God by my doubtfulness and complaints.”

– H A Baldwin, /Holiness & the Human Element/

said with utmost respect

Happy Father’s Day – to God the Father! (said with utmost respect.) My earthly Dad, Clyde D Bryan died when I was but 33, but my Heavenly Father lives forever. Dad was limited – my Heavenly Father is unlimited (except as He limits Himself). Dad was finite – my Heavenly Father is infinite. Dad was smart – my Heavenly Father is ALL wise! Dad loved me (never doubted it) – my Heavenly Father loved me when I was yet in sin, loved me into salvation & holiness, & will love to/through Eternity. What a Father!

A father may assent to a certain belief,

(Be it ten volumes long or half-page brief)

Daily touting its precepts to the sky.

He may claim to live by its law every day,

Say that he agrees with it in every way,

But if children follow not–I’m tempted to ask “Why?”

Be his doctrine in theories austerely fiscal,

Or universally educational,

Or so pragmatic as to just “get by.”

If a son does not follow his distant sails,

If his daughter never walks his distinct trails,

It’s natural to ask, to ask a solemn “Why, dad why?”

He may have convinced a friend, some fellow student

And many more he claims are very prudent,

Have a million “sheep” when he comes to die.

But if the family who knew him; knew him best,

Doesn’t belong to the great flock, like the rest,

Should it be painted so wrong to voice a little why?

A creed, theory, grandiose idea unique

If truly lived-out in dad’s life every week,

Even by ultra quiet “Mr. Shy,”

May find a few followers among close friends

But if not one child “sees” him right when life ends,

Not one agrees with his lifelong creed-Why tell me why?

Did they see it “impractical,” to say the least?

Some weird life that was all fast (maybe all feast),

Or all hilarity or some wild cry.

Did they see him champion a cause long dead,

Or see him as “la cabosa” in the head?

Why did his offspring not follow dad? Do you know why?

The above could be written ‘bout business or money,

‘Bout facets of life; bad or “sweet as honey,”

About slow plans or deals that “really fry.”

Religion?! If it was important to him

If he lived it in plenty and when years were slim,

Yet not a child walked his road – it’s no sin to ask “Why?”

Yes, sons are free moral agents; they’re free to choose.

Yes, daughters have wills; wills to win, wills to loose.

All souls must buy the truth or buy the lie.

But if dad really lived up to what he taught,

Practiced that for which he supposedly fought,

Why didn’t son believe? “Can anyone say why?”

Not all sons follow farmer daddies, or do law

Nor weld, teach, paint, nor build like him (without flaw)

Not choose the trade of that “Grand-OLE-Guy.”

True religion is no trade nor profession,

It’s about a constant, growing relation,

Did kids see dad’s religion as unreal, is that “Why”?

God says, “Train up a child in the way he should go.”

Training’s not easy, its not “Go with the flow.”

It was attached strings, and knots, bows, and ties.

(Even lowly ball has “Three strikes and you’re out!”)

Training sees big goals beyond tuck-head or pout.

No training?! Does that explain unexplainable “Whys?”

It matters not how a man may teach (even preach),

If his life did not touch his children; Reach Each!

Words/deeds must agree to solidify.

Right’s always right; though evil may appear strong,

Dads must positively, lovingly, oppose wrong.

To silence his children’s every seriously poised “Why.”

Luk 10.29

“But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’”

When you sense you have given a fair amount of Praise in prayer (we can never praise too much) you can move to petitions. “Pray tell for whom would I pray?” The neighbor North of you, the one South of you (if your house faces west, the northern one, is to your right, the southern one, too your left). “I don’t know their name.” Learn it. “How?” Ask them point-blank or ask a neighbor. Pray for the guy across the road from you. Pray for your family, by name. Pray for a boss or former boss, your fellow-workers, etc.

Mat 4.10

“…Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

Worship of God is about connecting to Him, the Ultimate, Eternal Reality.

Entertainment is about dis-connecting from reality. It’s like “going on strike” against the real world (work, pain, bills, problems), escaping into “make-believe” for the length of a ball game, hours of a movie, the laps of a race.

– eab, 6/14/18

Sci-fi movies go a step beyond “ordinary” movies. It’s not only an escape – its “fib” is try to escape: 1.) into a space, as imagined by men, 2.) into a “time warp,” as imagined by men, AND 3.) away from the laws of God & the consequences generated by God’s laws.

Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother.”

The one tempted to suicide may think, “I don’t see anything for which to live.” Allow a suggestion – You can Live To Pray [LTP]. You could become the “prayingest” soul with your last name (modern or ancient). You could become the one who prays the most (you may never know this-that’s OK) in your church. You could pray until no one prays more in your city or countryside. Praying is more important than most christians & many preachers seem to realize. Prayer can become your “strong suit.”

– eab, 6/13/18

“What on earth would I pray about?” You can start by Praising/Thanking Him. Praise God the Father for Who He is (the best you can understand Him). Praise/Thank Him for sending His Son (Joh 3.16). Thank/Praise Him for the gift of the Holy Spirit, our Comforter. Your praise can expand to include His created plant-life, animal-life, & the sun/moon/stars o’er head, etc. Praise/Thank God for “beans & taters” a roof overhead, clothing, (& again etc.) Let God know you appreciate His wonderful salvation, His provision of sanctification, & the hope of being glorified.

Have any idea how long “sci-fi” has been around? Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), wrote the first sci-fi, /Somnium/ (an Icelandic boy learning about the moon from a demon). Two modern “scientists,” Isaac Asimov & Carl Sagan, agreed that Kepler’s story was the first of this genre. (A sci-fi by an alleged scientist (Kepler) should raise an eyebrow, a 2nd eyebrow might go up when you realize this sci-fi is confirmed by two guys who also wanted to be seen as scientists. Is there a connection between “science” & sci-fi?)

As awakening sinners move toward God & therefore have an increased awareness of death & hell, they have less interest in what the world calls “entertainment.” As “christians” get sleepier & their fear of death & hell seems to wane, they get more interested in drama, games, plays, ventriloquism, movies, etc. The desire to be amused by this fleeting world is not a good sign.

Turning over a “new page” in life can sound good. It smacks of discipline & goals (both readily admired). It doesn’t sound so good when it’s realized one is still in the “same book” i.e. the same life – higher plane/new page, but same life. Give us ways of worshiping the Master,

Grant us ways.

In these days of rushing ever faster,

Restless days.

Urge us upward through the clamoring din,

Ever onward.

Till upward pulling You bring us in,

To brightest heaven, banished of sin,

To mansions prepared for mere men.

Pull us upward.

Draw us nearer to Your Father heart,

Bring us nearer.

Become dearer; not farther apart,

Always dearer.

Make my soul a simple scrap of steel,

Work my soul.

Make it sensitive to feel,

The attraction so real

Wood, hay, & stubble from me magnetically peel

Tug on my soul.

I pray Thee let us hear Thy calling voice,

O pray Thee.

Let us serve Thee by eternal choice,

Selflessly serve.

Soon tomorrow will beckon in haste,

Timeless tomorrow

Help us so live that when we are faced

With the record we have fixed in place

Our sojourn will not be a useless disgrace,

Has’en tomorrow.

Is it OK for a pastor/teacher/parent to say, “I don’t know”? Absolutely! “But, Jesus never did.” Gentle reminder: He was fully Man, but He was also fully God. (Had Jesus Christ said, “I don’t know” some could accuse Him of lying.) Jesus Christ, is the Person of the Holy Trinity we come closest to “understanding” (He was/is One of us) but the greatest mind walking the face of earth doesn’t comprehend Him (nor will we in Eternity). Some people’ve been lost at sea in storms. Others have jumped off. A fearful cry (more in the past, I assume than now) was “Man overboard!” Wake up, dear friend, “Once saved, always saved” doesn’t work except in a warped theology. Weddings have dazzling displaces of carnations, candles, & crepe. Music is there, friends are there, & hopefully God’s blessing is there. What a day! Enjoy! Another day will dawn. One or both will have to go back to work. Laundry gets dirty, grass needs mowed. The pay-the-bills-world follows but don’t let these mar your love. Weddings do not a marriage make. Being “Born Again” has been emphasized & should be. Allow me to remind – a baby that remains a baby is not normal. Are you growing in Christ? No, I didn’t ask if you’re more active in church.
