“Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter,

but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”

“I’m both weary and wary

of a lot of flippant speeches concerning God.”

– S D Herron, sermon (uncertain date)

What happened to our schools? #5

Third McGuffey Reader (4th – 5th grade, Rev.,1920) had these Christian words:

Absalom (p. 12),   Amen (p. 90),   Bible (p. 155, 206)    Example:

“Yes, sir; each boy has a Spelling Book, a Reader, and a Testament.” [Definitions. Testament, the last twenty-seven books of the Bible.] (Lesson LX, “The Contented Boy” – Dr. John Aiken)

“…The Book tells us that God talked with Moses face to face…that is the greatest, most wonderful privilege that God would share with us the things He wants to talk about.”

– S D Herron, sermon (uncertain date)

The first man chose to disobey

(God said to stay away).

His son chose to kill.

Soon sin was so in style

Mankind did it all the while;

Its stench was very ill.

Jas 1.26

“If any man among you seem to be religious & bridleth not his tongue

but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.”

I drove a Mack truck before I went to the 1st grade – allow me to explain. My “Mack” had 1 tire, instead of a steering wheel it had handles, & I made the noise including “changing gears.” You see, it was a pretend truck – little doubt “Mack” because I’d seen that bulldog on a hood. There are many souls today driving a pretend religion. It only has 1 tire (Salvation has 4). Their religion has weird “steering” (Salvation is Biblical). They are making the noise: emotional or ritual (Salvation has true Joy). My “Mack” was, to Dad, a wheelbarrow. Religions of man are in The Father’s sight less than wheelbarrows. Stop pretending – when you stop pushing, your religion stops. God’s Holy Salvation has the power to take you UP in the end.

“The excercise of faith in the promises which offer the victory

must be persisted in, regardless of feeling, until it becomes a fixed habit.”

– M W Knapp, / Revival Kindlings/

Sleep is voluntary. We purposely close our eyes to sleep. And, when we’re asleep we do not see things – either right or wrong – around us. If some readers would be honest they’d say, “I don’t see something like I used to; I don’t see anything wrong with “x.” Friend, bestir yourself. You are asleep & dangerously so.

– eab, 2/28/19

“Yield & Trust are the two keys that open…the soul temple for the Holy Spirit to enter & the same keys, & they are the only ones, will lock Him in. Don’t lose them nor lay them aside for one moment.”

What happened to our schools? # 4

Second McGuffey Reader (3rd grade, Rev.,1920) had these Christian words:

Prayed   (p.122)

Saint (p. 108)

Sinner (p.108)    Example:

‘Tis not the house & and not the dress, That makes the saint or sinner, To see the spider sit and spin,

Shut with her walls of silver in, You would never, never, never guess, The way she gets her dinner.

(Lesson XLIX, “Pretty Is That Pretty Does” – Alice Cary)

“…There is no love in hell. If you miss heaven, you have had the last expression of love

you’ll ever enjoy – never a kind word, never a loving expression.”

– S D Herron, sermon (uncertain date)

Alive or dead

Many a man appears to live,

Who in his heart is dead.

He, in HIS “garden” ate the fruit

Contrary to what God said.

His skin has the color of life;

His soul looks and feels as lead

And if unrepentant for his sin,

In hell he will “make his bed.”

Heb 12.14

“Follow peace with all [men] & holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:”

The man who shows carnality as its true, ugly self, & That it can be totally removed, That preaches death to self, That preaches the Holy Spirit only fills a perfectly clean vessel, & That heart purity is for all, is not welcome in some pulpits. Either he’ll never be invited or he won’t be invited back till the pastor is sanctified holy or leaves that church.

– eab, 2/24/19

“If we neglect the Word we will soon discover that Christ is neglecting us.”

– M W Knapp, /Christ Crowned Within/

God created heaven & earth. He didn’t “need” six days. God didn’t “need” a fabricated “gap theory.” He didn’t “need” any of man’s ideas including a so-called “day-age theory.” God is the only Being who truly “limits” Himself, & He is His fantastic wisdom, chose to stretch His creative acts across six, 24 hour days. He allowed Himself a day of rest & thus made man’s 1st full day on earth was a “day of rest.” He could’ve spoken it all into existence, Bang! But He thus established a wonderful week “For in six days the Lord…”

What happened to our schools? # 3

Second McGuffey Reader (3rd grade, Rev.,1920) had these Christian words:

Heaven, 2 times (pp. 34, 130)

Hymn, 2 times (pp. 122, 138)          Example:

“Ever gentle, meek, and mild, Thou didst nurse thy fretful child.

Teach these little feet the road, Leading on to heaven and God.”

(Lesson LXI, “My Mother” – no author sited)

“The modernists across the country…tear up Bethlehem’s Manger…tear down Calvary’s Cross…take Christ out of God…& the inspiration out of the Bible.”

Some hours ago the message came

A tiding rimmed in black.

Death has from our presence taken

Taken to never more give back

A brother (family – in Christ – is the same)

And we feel, (Shall I say it?) forsaken

Some hours ago the message came

A drear tiding “trimmed in black”

The scythe of death has laid another

Found our brother in its track

Slain him, laid him. He’ll not be back

Some hours ago the message came

The solemn message of the dead

These are always given and received with dread

Sad the duty to deliver, sadder yet to stand and take.

Someone else has gone in sleep, we are still awake.

Some hours ago the dreary tiding

Of death and distance, life and resistance

Came to sadden home and heart

Our brother has been taken, He did not awaken

Death has forced us apart.

Death that hideous, unwanted scourge

Smirk invader, undaunted persuader

Has plunged us into the dark

Stolen another husband, father, brother

Death is brazen, final, cold, stark.

But, Death listen! Listen

You have an empty shell. He is now well!

No more will sorrow or pain

Cause our brother sleepless nights

O’er trials, problems or slights

He’s triumphant–these are slain. * Steve D (Douglas) Herron d.2/25/94, dear brother, “educational father.” I have missed him!

Jude 1.18

“How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time,

who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.”

You can have murder in your wicked heart but never pull a trigger. Some preacher may call you a non-practicing “murderer” & welcome you into his membership. You can have sodomy in your wicked heart but never do the sinful act. Some preacher may call you a non-practicing “gay” & welcome you into his membership. Jesus Christ can remove the hatred from your heart & unnatural lust as well. You can then Join Jesus’ Church. Praise the Lord.

“Till you press the believers to expect full salvation now you must not look for any revival.” – J. Wesley” quoted by M W Knapp, /Revival Kindlings/

Share God. Unlike human friendships, sharing God does not impinge on your time with Him. (Or, for that matter, their time with the Lord.) God can “spend” time with you, “spend” time with your friend, “spend” time with Joe or Jane across town (or across the continent) & none of you will be the least slighted or stay so long in His presence & try His patience. God is the most Unique Being possible. – eab, 2/24/19

“You will pray in this life

or you will pray in Hell.”

– J Wesley Adcock, sermon “If I Make My Bed in Hell”

You’re going to be marooned on an island & can only have one book. How long will it take you to make up your mind what it’ll be? The thinking sinner might need a minute or two. A Christian knows immediately.

“No, my sinner friend, there is no such things as company in Hell.

The other fellow is too busy with his own suffering to comfort you.”

– J Wesley Adcock, sermon “If I Make My Bed in Hell”

Sometime last month you had a birthday;

The exact date, I’m sorry, I forgot.

You turned eighty-five, 85, I say.

Eighty-five years Brother, is a lot.

Four score and five is almost enough

To be antique. (Don’t be offended,

Antiques, you know, I love in the rough,

So stick with me till I’m ended.)

You’ve lived to see the horse-less carriage,

Turn from touring car to streamline.

And conversely the steam, steel-horse rage,

Once strong, you’ve seen fully decline.

The airplane you saw at its outset,[1]

Not dreaming that soon, oh so soon,

The bi-plane would give way to the jet,

And you’d live to see “men on the moon.”

As I’d mention a “great,” you’d known him:

Rees,[2] Fleming,[3] Culp,[4] Uncle Bud,[5] and Ruth,[6]

Anderson,[7] Stalker,[8] and Wireman.[9]

You’ve been privileged to hear preach the truth.

You have lived and known such a spectrum,

Of the past, and ones who have gone on.

You’re the one for me, who connects them,

A living, Godly historian.[10]

So I’m glad to have had you Brother,

As pastor, advisor, and friend.

With wishes for many another,

These (late) birthday greetings I send.

– eab, Feb. ‘75

Mom – can your daughter cook? (No, not thaw out & micro-wave. Cook?) If you were on the flat of your back could she put a meat, 2-3 veggies, a salad, & a desert on the table for company? Can she bake a pie from “scratch”? A cake? If she can’t do some or all of these as a pre-teen/early teen, when will she start? We need more homemakers who can do more, to stretch the dollar.

Dad, if you do not enjoy working (admittedly some chores are worse than others) ask God to help you /to learn/ to enjoy working better. (No, don’t say that’s impossible – not if you’re willing to learn.) If you do not like to work, like to see a “job done,” don’t sit down after completing a task with a real sense of accomplishment – you can’t teach these to you son. He needs to enjoy working – Please show him how.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful & just to forgive us our sins,

& to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The moment is rare when a man for the sake of his never dying soul, will make a brutally-honest public confession that he was wrong. Not just on one count but on two. When such a man has been a leader the possibility of him clearing his conscience gets slimmer. It would be wonderful if such a confession took place this spring.

“A revival spirit & an unforgiving spirit can not more dwell together in the same heart than fire & water can unite.”

– M W Knapp, /Revival Kindlings/

Sadly, satan has commandeered some “…science falsely so called”(1Ti 6.20). Certain guys, with straight faces, tell you “Earth is an insignificant planet in a vast universe” – shortened version of what they spout. First, the Bible nowhere calls earth a “planet” (word doesn’t occur in Bible in singular & its one plural usage is connected to false religion). Second, earth is the most, /repeat/, most significant place any living man knows & as for the dead, earth is where they settled for Heaven or hell. Insignificant? I don’t think so!

“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth,

will draw all men unto me.”

Today starts a new series. Our schools are a major reason for America’s spiritual problems. These notations about & from the McGuffey Readers show how far, how very far, we’ve strayed in just a few decades. These are from the revised McGuffeys (1920). (To put that in prospective my dad graduated from high school in 1923.) Our students have been robbed of the influence of Christ & His teachings. And, this was purposely done. God have mercy on US.

McGuffey Intro. If you have ’t heard of McGuffey’s Readers – little background. William Holmes McGuffey (b. 9/23/1800) was a “roving” teacher by age 14 (48 students in one sch. alone). Between teaching jobs he received a classical education, graduated from Washington College, & at 26 yrs of age was appointed Professor of Languages at Miami Univ.,Oxford, OH. His McGuffey’s Readers sold in excess of 120,000,000 copies (1836-1960) ranking it close to Webster’s Dictionary & even toward the sales of Bibles.

# 1 Between 9:30 & 10 the Hausman’s arrived at our bungalow with crock-pots to plug in & other food.. We all left for church at 10 something. When we arrived the Dickinsons were already there. It was pure pleasure to see 2 Hausman girls & 2 Dickinson girls playing their violins for the congregational hymn & offertory. The Hausmans provided a special & the Dickinson Family sang. I told one of the church ladies I was rich – rich in grandchildren. Nice to worship with 13 (daughters, son-n-laws, & grands).

# 2 Martha & I had set up our oak table (bought used in Cincy c.1964 & brought home in Dwight Luther’s Chevy-my VW was too small) with its 6 leaves & an overflow table. Our girl’s families fixed & brought all the food. It was a crowded but enjoyable time. Garlic chicken, Potato casserole, Tossed salad, Green beans, Rolls, Berry pies, & “the necessary” J Chocolate cake. Good food, better fellowship. Thank you, dear family for all the bother to prepare & pack the food, all the way up here.

# 3 The occasion? Our oldest s-n-l got a year older on Feb. 11, as did yours truly; same date but one in ’69, other ’43. Last couple of years (if I remember correctly) we went their direction but it was nice they brought the family (but Natasha) to visit, howbeit briefly, with us. Both families left to go back to church in Pleasant Plain & Phillip to speak there that night. Moma/Gram & I were happy to see you ALL. A bunch of cows? (A herd.) A bunch of lions? (A pride.) A bunch of grandkids? (A WEALTH of grandchildren.)

It’s easy to be modern

When you live in a modern day,

To let the old slip from you

To let it slide far away.

All that’s “progress” is not progress;

All was not bad in yesterday.

How we need a fresh revival

Oh, how we need again to pray.

The grand old Book has been replaced

By religious movies and plays.

Great revivals were not products

Of “seminars,” or picnic days!

“…He which converteth the sinner from the error of his way

A change is coming. This change will be phenomenal & final. It’s coming to/for you, to your family members, to your every friend, in fact, to each human on the face of the earth. It’s. Called. Death. Perhaps a grandparent’s funeral was your first memory of Death. A few years/decades & Death took a sibling or a parent. We were very much on the “outside” of these. On a practical $ide – the habit of men renting tuxedos & shoes for weddings (IMO) needs to be updated. They’re so expensive, have only a one-time use, & there’s the bother of having to return them in x hrs. Instead let all the men buy quality matching black or charcoal-gray suits. – Orlow Webb, sermon 10/30/85

It is entirely up to God what Light He sheds on your pathway & mine. And, in a sense, it’s entirely up to us if we walk in our God-given Light.
