“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; “Or unto governors…”

“…Parents cannot do God’s work & God will not do theirs…

Parents are called to correct, not to punish their children.”

– Adam Clarke

I passed some places near here today. The people there never worry about an electric or gas bill. They have no rent nor house payments, & some haven’t paid taxes in years. You probably have a section in your town that’s exactly like this. It’s called a cemetery. If they went up, they have (IMO) probably long forgotten about all the above. If they went below, they could wish they had they above & could therefore be here & repent. Friend, get ready – our day cometh.

no message on his heart, & no earnestness in his soul.”

– Glenn Griffith /I Sought for a Man/

May 13 Martha & I got to tour Phillip/Heather’s new home & meet its former builder & two sons. It’s a lovely place in southern OH. He took a load, some kids & Martha (so they could visit). I took a small load, daughter & two sons with me. Enjoyed our discussions. On way home a different part of the family rode with me & had a nice discussion. Love my grandsons & granddaughters so much. On the 14th we were able to share in Elijah’s 11th birthday party. Came home on the 15th, tired & happy to be in our own bed again.

1Sa 15.22b – 23a

“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice & to hearken than the fat of rams.

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft & stubbornness is as iniquity & idolatry.”

“Modest is humility dressed up…”

– Glenn Griffith /I Sought for a Man/

Went to Lancaster Tuesday with Pastor Carl Eisenhart & Phillip Dickinson to visit the head of the Christian Nation Churches, Ron Justice, who was hospitalized. They went in first & I think Phillip told him his wife’s name middle name & I’m not sure what else. As I walked in Bro Justice said that I looked like Bro. Colwell. He knew him, my favorite uncle, & was part of his church in New Lex many yrs. ago. He & his wife were at my cousin Kenny Colwell’s funeral & so was I, but we didn’t know each other. Ron & I may’ve been in the same Free Meth. Sun.Sch.1952-53. It was nice re-meet (?) him & make connections.

“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another,

& be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud & giveth grace to the humble.”

“Departed spirits are not men; & dead men cannot be tried till the resurrection of the dead takes place when departed spirits & raised bodies will form men again by their re-union.”

– John Fletcher /Works I/

“What pleasure must the discovery of Divine truth give to a sanctified soul!”

– John Fletcher /Works I/

Seen in life, or seen in death

A mansion of stone or brick, did you say,

Ov’rlooking the point where river meets bay,

With four-storied garrets, room for four cars,

And a high domed-room to study the stars,

A half-mile lane and personal tennis court,

Kentucky-fenced knoll were horses cavort,

An indoor pool with a European tub,

All this close, to the golf-course, country club?

The finest mansion you have ever seen,

With yard upon yard – green trimmed in lush green,

The highest castle on a curved mountain spine,

With stair cases, great room, stones to entwine

Or glorious condo above pure beach,

With “condiments” in commodious reach,

All appear huts, caves, shelters poorly made,

When death reveals truth, and life starts to fade.

Books in Prayer Closet # 1. The most important Book to have in your Secret Closet is the Good Book. Have a straight-edge & pens. Red for one line of truth, blue for another. Or use a highlighter to mark special passages [check highlighter on last page; see if it “bleeds-through” – depends on paper or highlighter or both]. If praying becomes a bit hard you may want to read the Bible & then take heed to what the Spirit shows you in such times.

– 5/16/19

Col 3.16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching & admonishing one another

in psalms & hymns & spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Books in Prayer Closet # 2. The 2nd most important Book for is a hymnal. Be willing to mark it also. You could read a hymn to start or one to finish – you might go on for a time from the “fuel” of it. If you are struggling to pray, start reading some hymns. (I’d encourage you to read them in order & leave a marker to use next time.) BTW you don’t have to be able to read music to read the words (really a poem) nor do you need to “know it” to read it. Many hymns were written when pressure was on & that comes through.

– 5/16/19

“Preach damnation with the cross in the center.”

– Wm Booth, quoted by Andrew Blackwood

Books in Prayer Closet # 3. Why not take a notebook to the closet? It could hold a prayer list. Some like to note date when they start praying for a certain thing & then date when “the Lord comes through!” It could be divided into sections with a place for ideas that come to you while praying & meditating before God.

– 5/16/19

“It is the joyous privilege of the man in the pulpit to see the hidden things of God

& then show them to the man in the pew.”

1Pe 4.14

If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory & of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

“A godly man must save both time & money. Before he was converted he lost…time & squandered…money. All this he now saves & therefore wealth & riches must be in his house: & if he do not distribute to the necessities of the poor, they will continue to accumulate till they be his curse.

– Adam Clarke

A former student of mine once responded in class, “God wants us to be happy.” That is true, profoundly true. It will be true a 1000 yrs from today – – – IF spoken of the Next World. In this world, satan (as he has, since Eve) promises happiness – all his promises are lies.

– 4/20/19

“With [some] learning is all in all; it is the substitute for the unction of Christ

& the grace & influences of the Holy Spirit.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

The pray-er is a spokeswoman/spokesman for God, to God.

The preacher is a spokesman for God, to his fellowman.

– 4/21/19

God “Paints” with Light

God made solid forms – they appear left and right

Hill, mountain, stone, rocks, shrub and tree

Then he splashes them with varied light

Till same-ish-ness is lost in variety.

He made more mobile forms – apparent to sight

Waves which roam the sea, clouds the sky

Different they look today than last night

Light glances on low tide or up on high.

On his firm forms He “paints” – with brushes slight

They are light or dark at His supreme will

And sea or sky look dull or quit bright

By the light, His light He allows to “spill.”

– eab, May 2010

“Sanctification requires no greater degree of faith than justification.”

– J A Wood /Perfect Love/

Reasons some consider suicide:

1.) they’ve committed a bad sin. – Don’t forget Jesus Christ saves sinners. (Only ones he saves!)

2.) they want people to feel sorry for them. – “I’ll   show ‘em.” A very stupid decision

3.) they have horrible pain. – Live one day at a time.

There are no GOOD reasons to consider suicide. None. They are all selfish.

– 5/6/19

1Th 5.3

“…When they shall say, ‘Peace & safety’ then sudden destruction cometh upon them,

as travail upon a woman with child; & they shall not escape.”

“Christians begin to backslide when they feel it their duty &

see it their privilege to seek holiness & refuse to do it.”

– J A Wood /Perfect Love/

The average person doesn’t want to be disturbed when they’re drifting off to sleep. (A terrifying, spiritual sleepiness permeates much of the church.) So – – – it’s understandable when a post “jars” & they react. But even their “come-back” can work to good; it may flow through their minds more because they “resented” & responded. Yes, the 5 wise virgins slept, but please balance that with Paul’s “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch & be sober”(1Th 5.6).

Rev 12.9a

“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil & Satan,

which deceiveth the whole world:

“Great possessions are generally accompanied with pride, idleness

& luxury & these are the greatest enemies to salvation.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Saints see this world is deceptive. The closer saints are to Christ the more they realize how widely spread is deception. Sinners, by sad contrast, are fooled. They hope by sinning more, to be happier, & so they go deeper into satan’s trap. Saints became saints because they got tired of the devil’s lies. Sinner will see his fakery, but only (I fear) after it is too late to change.

“How astonishing is God’s kindness! It is not the rich merely he calls on to be charitable…

the poor are called to relieve those who are poorer…”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

“Wesley…did not insist on the Arminian doctrines as a condition of membership in his societies.”

A Soliloquy.  “Effie? – Effie Morgan? – No! Not Effie! Effie Morgan did not die! She wouldn’t have gone without telling me ‘Good Bye.’ O, Effie. — O, Effie.” [Someday the nearest & dearest “bundled up” or completely unbundled, will slip over the hill & be gone.] “O, Effie, Effie.”

Tit 2.5

“…Discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

“It does not take a true Christian long to scent & detect the ‘wild gourd in the pot.’”

– George Straub

There is an old institution I’ve heard a lot about, have been near it, have even helped it advance, but have never belonged. It is one of the greatest institutions on earth & had Eve as its first member. It is the Institution of Motherhood. Mom (1907-2012) was an honored member of this institution. Thank you, Mom – God bless your memory. My m-n-l is still a member (1922-pres.) Thank you, Moma Stel. After being married a few weeks over 3 yrs my wife was inducted into this honorable institution & later was a member 3 more times. Our 2 daughter-n-laws became members of the Institution of Motherhood. Our 2 daughters also, in their own times became members. I’m so happy Martha could be a Mother & also glad that all four children could reproduce themselves. Long. Live. The. Institution. Of. Motherhood! – 5/11/19

God, the Father, as Teacher.

“…I taught them rising up early & teaching them yet they have not hearkened…”(Jer 32.33)

God, the Son, as Teacher.

“Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught” (Joh 7.14)

God, the Holy Ghost, as Teacher.

“…Holy Ghost whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things…”(Joh 14.26)

“…A truly learned man is ever humble…& one under the influence of the Divine Spirit is ever meek, gentle…the proud & the insolent are neither Christians nor scholars.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Churches were once seats of learning. “…I teach every where in every church.”(1Co 4.17). Wesley made his mistakes (marriage, long hair) but using non-Oxford men was not one. Many a young man has been an under-study with an established pastor. (Nor does that pastor need to be famous.) God is not necessarily looking for “learned” men, but for men who love Him & who want to learn all He will teach them.

– 5/9/19

“If Christ be a forever priest there can be no succession of priests, & if he has all power in heaven

& in earth & if he be present wherever two or three are…he can have no vicars…”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

I’ve been praying for a John-the-Baptist or like Prophet, to enter a certain church & “shell the woods.” The preacher is not going to but, Oh, for exhortations against sin & toward holiness, to ring again in those walls. (A few of you have been to this church.)

– 5/9/19

Ma! Oh the happy ear received,

Mom, on the heart ever recorded,

Moma often thinks her efforts rigid,

Madre operates the home easily rewarded,

Mother occurs to help ease regularly,

Mother’s own touch: heaven’s earthly royalty.

“‘There goes John Newton, had it not been for the grace of God.’ Newton exclaimed to a friend

…as they passed a criminal on his way to execution.”

– Quoted by Able Stevens

When an institution (college, to conference, to camp meeting) has purposely moved left, they can’t “afford” to bring in a fire & brimstone preacher. He, under the Majestic prodding of Blessed Holy Spirit, might convict a board-member or others & “ruin” their slide toward totally apostasy.

– 5/9/19

Psa 43.3

“O send out thy light & thy truth: let them lead me;

let them bring me unto thy holy hill & to thy tabernacles.”

“He [Whitfield] was an enthusiast doubtless, but in the best sense,

and in no sense a fanatic.”

– Able Stevens

“Rite ” is not in the NT. “Ritual” is not in the NT. “Tradition/Traditions” are negative in the NT (except for one each, use by Paul). “Church calendar” is a term foreign to the NT, as is the word “sacrament.” Don’t be mislead by the move toward formalism in what were once Holiness Churches.

Joh 14.6 +

Joh 14.6

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:

no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

“How many auspicious beginnings have been ruined by men’s proceeding too hastily,

endeavoring to make their own designs take place, & have the honor of success…”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Love Truth, and – if you live to see the sun again – love Truth again. Hate lies today, hate lies tomorrow, & never allow yourself to become comfortable with them – they have the wrong “father.”

– 4/21/19

“In many cases the success of a preacher’s labors

depends more on his prayers than on his public preaching.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Some dogs are looking for an excuse to bark. When you walk down the road, you’re their excuse.

Some people are looking for an excuse to praise God & feel good that they praise Him, now & then. But the Book says, “…Let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually…(Heb 13.15)

Little squirrel with bushy tail

From tree to tree I see you sail

Never once to see you fail,

The air to slice.

It must be nice. – eab, May 1966

“You have taken each other for better & for worse;

the worse came first, & it will now be all the better.”

– Hodgson Casson to newly saved couple, quoted by Able Stevens

The western (civilized?) world movie goers take the actor & actress entirely too serious. It would be hard to find a more fake pack of people anywhere on earth. They know that all you “see” (if wasting your time on such garbage) is fake – you never see the “4th wall.” But these soul are getting paid well (far too much), are seeing their names in bright lights (worldlings love fame), & are actually being quoted by media (as if their opinion matters). Wake up & STOP supporting hollywood/disney & ilk.

Mat 12.36

“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.”

“To divest it of any apparent clerical pretensions it was voted that none of the preachers should

wear gowns, cassocks, bands or surplices & thet the title ‘Reverend’should not be used by them.”

– Able Stevens

God is REAL at a depth, height, & width our minds cannot grasp. As His followers we want to be like him i.e. to be real. When something is discovered to be artificial, it may alarm us, disgust us, but it also makes us distance ourselves from it. We love the realness of God & have no interest in anything less than real.

Mat 19.9 +

Mat 19.9

“…Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication & shall marry another, committeth adultery: & whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.”

[Note: “fornication” is not “adultery.” “Adultery” is not “fornication.”]

“The soul that relishes God’s word

is ever growing in grace by it.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

I’m sorry you’re caught in an unscriptural marriage. I mean every word of that. When you realize the Bible condemns your “union” Take Action. A 2nd divorce may be necessary or a legal separation may be enough (IMO). “But I can’t.” I imagine satan will throw obstacles in your path. But, you can’t afford to die an adulterer or adulteress – hell is too hot. “I can’t live unmarried 40 yrs.” 3 thoughts: 1.) You may die in 40 days & be glad you minded God.  2.) 40 yrs (if God allows) is a long time when looking ahead – it’s “like nothing” when looking back.  3.) It is not 40 yrs – it is, One. Day. At. A. Time!

– May 2019

“Let the Scriptures…lead you to that Holy Spirit by which they were inspired;

let that Spirit lead you to Jesus Christ…let this Christ lead you to the Father…”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Our finite minds cannot grasp God’s infinity. They can’t now. They (IMO) will not be able to, as gloried minds, one millennia “into eternity” nor a million millennia “into eternity.” Troublesome? Not at all. It’s great, as limited beings, to have a Father – son relationship with One who’s unlimited, now & forever.

– 5/3/19

Commencement – a beginning of service, I trust.

Or will you be, the one to see

Material gain as a must?

Gain in realm of fame of name,

Or pounds of finest gold dust.

Will you be the one, to hinder the Son,

And sit or lie as time goes by

And millions are born and millions die,

And souls are seen, as birds, to fly,

While the church thinks of Me, Mine, and My.

Commencement – a beginning of what?

A beginning of service – I trust!

– eab, May 1968

“Men’s hearts were never more in danger than now. Such is human nature

that it is difficult for us to differ in our opinions & love the brethren.”

– Able Stevens

One of the slickest tricks satan has played in the last decades is about “pride.” Holiness people – who, in theory at least, believe the Spirit removes pride in sanctification – are using the word “pride” in frightening frequency. Jesus never said, “Peter, I’m proud of you.” Paul never wrote, “You make me proud.” Please, Friend, search Scripture; as I read It all pride is carnal.

– 5/5/19

Mar 1.15

“…The time is fulfilled & the kingdom of God is at hand:

repent ye & believe the gospel.”

“A. Clarke…known to the Methodist world mostly by his writings but his real greatness was in the pulpit. One of his hearers, ‘In respect to the unawakened…he obeys the precept, ‘Cry aloud…’ ”

– Able Stevens

Fake news? Fake news from the guys who’re saying you can trust them? Very possibly. Fake news is new in the last yrs? Please! There have been fake statements (IMO) in papers, magazines, books & YES, text books for decades. Our concepts of WWI, WWII & all lesser wars (men-killing, building-destroying, money-making wars) since, are based on what a writer (left or “right”) saw worth writing, & what his publisher saw worth printing. The Good News (Gospel) is the only news you can trust 100%. Period. – 5/5/19
