Psa 122.1

“I was glad when they said unto me,

Let us go into the house of the LORD.”

“…counties of Antrim & Londonderry…Ireland…common name for the devil…was ‘the sorrow’…he who is miserable himself & whose aim is to make all others so.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Where do your children see you the most happy? 1.) At a formal (quiet, hear-a-pin-drop) kind of church? 2.) At a contemporary (“wally-wally, bing-bang”) kind of church?  3.) At a God-worshipping church (whether holy quietness or shouts of rightness)? – – – Or 4.) Someplace other than church?

“A man must consent to sin before he can sin.

God has so constituted the human will that it cannot be forced.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

My God is the God of the Sacred page

He, ageless, is the Lord of every age

He pre-dates the gods of sports and stage

He’ll out-live all gods of war and rage

His love can make “heaven” of a cage

His grace has no adequate gage

His reward exceeds every earthly wage

He has no equal – my Lord of Sacred page. – eab, 6/21/11

God can take all your wrongs

And give you a right heart

He can “oil up” your whistle

Trade a flower for your thistle

Remove that carnal bristle.

And, Friend – – – that is just the start!

-eab, 6/20/19

“…Everything we have ever heard in a Holiness tent meeting, every…dream & foretaste of heaven…when we got loose & got out in the aisle & got our hands in the air…& felt that God was all around & heaven was not 10 feet away, will that day become a glorious reality!”

– Lawrence B Hicks, “There Must Be…Somewhere”

Pay careful attention to these urges – they are opposites.

Positive: “How can I please Christ more & fellowship deeper with Him?”

Negative: “I don’t think God cares about such /little/ details.”

– 6/16/19

Pro 18.24

“A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and

there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”

“…God saved & sanctified her boy & called him to preach…been preaching second-blessing holiness as hard as he knew how to preach it.”

– Lawrence B Hicks, “There Must Be…Somewhere”

Can we be friends with people who don’t agree with us? On everything? We better hope so – or we’ll have few (if any) friends.  Many of my friends & I agree on a fairly high percentage of things. A great friend & I disagreed on two important issues: divorce & remarriage & the importance of the KJV. Hot subjects with some, but our friendship survived. Another friend & I disagreed on facial hair yet our friendship remained intact. Give people room to disagree. You don’t have to dot all their “i’s” or cross all their “t’s” to like them. Honor where you do agree, & be gracious where you don’t.

“This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not

what things they were which he spake unto them.”

…Persons who disguise that part of their creed [that] would make them unpopular…moderation in order to procure a larger audience & more extensive support; not attacking prevalant & popular vices…”

– Adam Clarke

24 of 46 “…Pride & arrogancy…do I hate”(Pro 8.13).

Isa 28.1 Woe to the crown of PRIDE, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

“Shun all controversies about politics…though I have often heard it,

I never knew an instance of its doing good…”

– Adam Clarke, /Christian Theology/

The Lord paints without paint,

And He draws without a pencil stroke;

Makes music without an instrument

Passing wind across willow & oak.

Creates forms with water, running oft & long,

And gives a tiny bird its trilly, tweety song.

God’s Artist magnificent (if that’s not to crass a word).

“Word”? Ah, there it is – the best way He’s daily heard

Enjoy His art a little today,

Mainly – though – read His Word.

It never passes away.

Christ was the most authentic Person to walk the earth. If we’re serious about being “Christ-like” we’re very interested in being authentic. Synonyms for authentic are genuine & real; an antonym is fake – “Hello? anybody home?” Be, friend, who you really are, day-in, day-out. Heaven will have only authentic people. Hell will have the ones who were satisfied, even happy, with “…deceiving & being deceived” (2Ti 3.13).

Psa 1.1

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,

nor standeth in the way of sinners,

nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

The greatest man, from a human stand point, is the most self-sufficient one. He grows his own food (some-to-most), makes his home (fancy/simple but either way debt-free), creates his tools, &/or trades/barters his needs, enjoys re-doing/making-do with what he has. He’s to be admired. The greatest man, from Heaven’s view, is the most God-relying one. He looks to God (Living Word, & printed Word) for spiritual food, invites God daily into his home & enjoys the communion he has with the Lord. He’s to be imitated.

– 6/18/19

“…The Holy Ghost teaches, preaches, & declares Christ…we must first hear the Word

& then afterwards the Holy Ghost works in our hearts…”

– Martin Luther /TableTalk/

When God is honest with you & your spiritual condition, don’t be aggravated. Thank Him. That’s what He is – Honest. We could n’ver have a better God than One who’s perfectly Honest with us. By contrast when you find out that satan has lied to you, don’t be surprised – that’s what he & his helpers do. You can expect nothing better from him, e-v-e-r. One of the greatest skills you can acquire is “voice recognition” i.e. learn to tell the voice of the Lord from the voice of His (& your) arch enemy. God is honest – satan is dishonest. – 6/18/19

“None of the fathers of the church made mention of original sin

until Augustine came…”

Rom 1.32 +

Rom 1.32

“Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”

“…He who preaches the un-adultered doctrine of the God who bought him, will be hated by the Christian world…spurious Christians are the prime persecutors of the genuine followers of the Lord Jesus.”

– Adam Clarke

A super serious list of sins were penned by Paul in Romans 1. Followers of Christ should review this gross catalogue making sure we’re opposing these in our society. And, being sure we’re not slowly, almost imperceptively participating in any. Paul closes by saying “…have pleasure in them that do them.” There are FAR too many “christians” who (though they don’t DO some items listed) derive a sordid pleasure (via movies, TV, social media) from watching the killing, adultery, pride & other sins which God hates.

– 6/18/19

“Never be boisterous or dogmatic. Self confidence will soon lead to a forgetfulness of the presence of God; then you will speak your own words & perhaps in your own spirit…”

– Adam Clarke, /Christian Theology/

We thank You Lord, for Your goodness,

To the human race.

Your light and Your mercy,

Your holiness and Your grace.

A beautiful world in which to live,

A beautiful life because of the life that You give;

Oh, we thank You for Your blessings on this place.

– eab, Jun. ’71

To enjoy a ventriloquist is to “enjoy” being fooled. The “dummies” watching the ventriloquist play with the doll, know it’s a dummy, yet watch anyway. He is purposely deceiving his crowd – they’re purposely taking pleasure in being deceived. Such entertainment (as much “entertainment”) is shallow, temporary, & doesn’t belong in a saint’s life. No Christian should be a deceiver. And it definitely doesn’t belong in God’s Holy House. – 6/18/19

2Ti 2.22

“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace,

with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

You’re a pure teenage girl or single young lady & you find yourself, by accident, alone in a room or empty building with a man. Flee! If he’s your peer or only a few years above you, or if he’s old enough to be your grandpa – Flee! You have a valuable name (virgin) to protect – don’t give the devil half-a-chance to ruin it. And you own it to the man also. The devil can use more than one way to ruin a man’s life but the accusation of sexual sin is a major one. If you were in conversation when you realized the danger, simply say, “Excuse me, I must run” (& your must). You owe him no other explanation. Leave NOW. Flee.

“So at this day the Papists brag, that they call back those to the bosom of their mother the holy church…”

– Martin Luther /Commentray on Galatians/

Was privileged to sit recently (2 or more times) within a family circle for their morning, devotional time. Dad, the family patriarch, led a time of memorizing Scriptures (the family repeating after him) with verse & reference. This was followed by a brief explanation of the passage to which others could contribute or ask questions. Prayer requests were given by the mother or children, regardless of age. As a “guest” I was pre-asked to pray, after the requests were completed. God has to look down on a lot of debauchery & I’m sorry. But Oh, how it must thrill Him to see such family altars. Thank God for Christian homes. – 6/18/19

Mat 5.8 +

Mat 5.8

“Blessed are the pure in heart:

for they shall see God.”

“By learning a man may acquire knowldge; by knowledge, reduced to practice, experience;

& from knowledge & experience wisdom is derived.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Individuals with holy hearts (clean from pride, hatred, jealousy etc.) are happy. As opportunities arise they’re happy to tell others about inward purity. “Well, I wouldn’t want to say I was pure inside, it could sound like I was bragging.” Please understand, no person is pure of themselves. So, to speak of this miracle is to “Brag” on Jesus. Without His sacrificial gift no one is clean. With His death & resurrection we can be pure. All the glory belongs to Jesus. All. Of. It. Now & forever!

– 5/26/19

 “[Some] are fond of displaying their human credentials. These are easily shown;

those that come from God are out of their reach.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

Poison ivy didn’t grow in the bowers of Eden

Or, if it did, it wasn’t poisonous there.

And the wolf didn’t live in the glens of the Garden

Or, if so, he was gracious to share.

We can look back in anger at Adam’s great sin

And we can wish to have lived in his place.

But there cometh a day much like Eden and better,

For all the redeemed,

ALL the redeemed of our whole race.

“…The central part of Pentecost is the Person

…the Holy Spirit…”

– S D Herron, sermon

You can go to heaven. Yes, you & You & YOU. The voice that says you can’t go there is satan – he’s a liar. But listen closely – you’ll have to want to go be with Jesus MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE! Drop everything that hinders you from being in the presence of Christ. Please hear me, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. There will be no “dyed-in-the-wool” republican (or democrats) in heaven. There’ll be no lovers of pleasure (more than they loved God). Die out to money, recognition, fame (yes even fame within church circles). You can go UP but it will take all the manhood you have. Ready?

– 6/11/19

Mat 5.48

“Be ye therefore perfect,

even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

“…Philip was living close enough to God, he could discern that it was God.

So he hurried down to Gaza.”

– S D Herron, sermon

“THAT will not happy at ‘x’ Christian school” (the one of your choice). “They’ll never have immorality between staff & student.” “They’ll not teach a compromised theology of holiness.” “They’ll not wink at the defining lines between purity & the world.” Oh? Please, I’m not advocating being carnally suspicious – But you & I need a holy watchfulness. Write no man (or organization) a “blank check.” All are accountable. – 6/14/19

Rev 22.11

“He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: & he which is filthy, let him be filthy still:

& he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: & he that is holy, let him be holy still.”

“Canst thou be happy while thou art unholy…

Canst thou love him a little without desiring to love him more?”

– Adam Clarke, /Christian Theology/

23 of 46 “…Pride & arrogancy…do I hate”(Pro 8.13).

Isa 25.11 And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim: and he shall bring down their PRIDE together with the spoils of their hands.

“Such is the nature of God that he cannot be more willing

to save thee in any future time than his is now.”

– Adam Clarke, /Christian Theology/

Don’t be angry with signs of age:

Wrinkles, slower gait, the “hair” you fear.

These, from God’s not-so-subtle page,

Show that soon you’ll no longer be here.

Here on earth, as beautiful as it can be,

Here on earth with sea, the bee, the tree

Here with the multitudes like you and me.

He is wanting/waiting for us to prepare

To be with the Trinity up there.

There, sin may be remembered not,

There, love is perfect, not lukewarm, but hot,

And There holiness dwells on every “city lot.”

Not all people age, but those who do – – –

Have clear warnings. Tell Him, “Thank You!”

– eab, 6/14/16

So – you plan to spend eternity with God? I kindly ask, Are you sure? Does the fraction of time (a few minutes out of a day, or even 1 hour of 24) indicate we really enjoy His presence? Please do not think I saying all prayer time is on our knees – we can/should pray while driving a car/tractor, while doing daily tasks, while even in conversation. I urge us (you & me) to increase our fellowship time with God, Now.

– 6/14/19

Eph 4.22

“That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man,

which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts”

Sadly the day’s arrived when a church dare not automatically expect a graduate of “x” Bible college to be a holiness preacher. A church could have an application form for a pastor. Among several questions (How much is he in debt? Why did he leave his last position? What’s his stand on divorce & remarriage? etc.) have him explain his beliefs about the 1.) filling of the Spirit, 2.) death to the “old man” 3.) When is the last time he preached an entire message on the necessity of being sanctified? Some church may need this today. – 6/14/19

“…This poem [Psa 119] is not & does not pretend to be a sudden outpouring of the heart like say Psalm 18. It is a pattern a thing done like embroidery stitch by stitch through long quiet hours for love of the subject & for the delight in leisurely disciplined craftsmanship.”

– C S Lewis /Reflections on the Psalms/

I do NOT agree with the sodomites commandeering the colors of the “rainbow.” Never. Reality check? They have. And (IMO) are not likely to give them up. I don’t use these colors behind my posts if possible. Nor am I likely to click “like” for your post if it has rainbow colors (though I may agree with the words). They had no right to swipe these. Sadly, in similar fashion, tongues speaking” churches, had no right to commandeer the word Pentecostal. (Holiness people, non-tongues speaking, are the true Pentecostals. (Credit: Ward French) But since public perception is otherwise, I don’t refer to myself as a Pentecostal.

“Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth:

for the LORD is a God of knowledge & by him actions are weighed.”

“But pride, that busy sin, spoils all that I perform…”

– Isaac Watts – quoted by A Clarke

22 of 46 “…Pride & arrogancy…do I hate”(Pro 8.13).

Isa 23.9 The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the PRIDE of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.

“Pride works frequently under a dense mask

Why the painted finger nail, the painted toe?

Does paint make more healthy? Is it for show?

Paint on the body draws cheap attention.

Let your mind, & soul, be your best attraction.

The world said, “Come.” The girl said, “How far?”

“Only a short way.”

“Live a little, enjoy the day.”

The girl, “I’m already quite a ways

From how I was carefully raised.”

“Tsk. Come, I can make you a star.” – eab, June 2018

You are a student, a farmer, an entrepreneur or a homemaker. There are 3 or 4 things you must do today, 1 of which you dread – which do You do last? Let me to encourage you – do the worst first. Get that hardest subject studied first, do the worst chore first, make yourself accomplish the toughest task first. From there “it’s all down hill.” The Triune God has made the worst first for the child of God – earth is the roughest (yes it can be hard at time) you’ll know. But if you fail to believe God & go to hell (Heaven forbid) earth’s problems will look like a picnic. – 6/12/19

Rom 3.4

“…Let God be true, but every man a liar…”

> Everyman: be he politician, PhD, or parent. <

My parents (Bless the memory of Clyde & Ruth Bryan) taught me to never call a man a liar. That was good advice – may have saved me from getting my face re-arranged. Please stop calling God a liar – – – oh, hopefully no reader does it verbally but there’s danger, a real danger, in doubting His promises, especially those which “jump off the page” for you. Believe God. Believe His Word. If/when we doubt God (that’s the opposite of belief) we are in effect saying that God is not telling the truth. That is Super Serious. – 6/12/19

“You have free will & if you choose you can push Me away.

But if you do not push Me away understand that I am going to see this job through…”

– C S Lewis /Beyond Personal/

You’ll someday no longer be worldly – not in appearance, nor attitude or nor amusement. Hopefully you will surrender these & so love Christ that they disappear from your life. Voluntarily. Or, hear it, or you die & leave all worldliness behind. (Yes, I also have seen a corpse which looked worldly, but we both know the real person was not there.) Friend, since you must – one way or the other – forsake all this world, why not do it now? Do it voluntarily, for Jesus sake, rather than have it torn from your dying fingertips?

What manner of Babe is this, born in the hay there?

What manner of Child, visited by eastern kings?

The only birth that really matters is the New Birth!

I seriously question that saints in heaven pay much (if any) attention to their earthly BD.

And – – – sinners in hell, sadly wish they’d Never been born.

2Th 2.10

“…They received not the love of the truth,

that they might be saved.”

If you don’t love truth as you once did; you’re in trouble. Pray until you love truth – even when it hurts.

If heaven doesn’t excite you as it once did; you’re in trouble. Ask God to restore the joy of salvation.

You once lived a life less like the world. Due to parental restraints, or christian school rules, or Best, God’s leadership for you, there were places you didn’t go, words you didn’t say, items you didn’t wear. You can return, prodigal, to Father’s house, If you really want to, If you want to go to heaven (& want to miss hell) more than anything, repeat, Anything. You can be holy. Will it be easy? Time was when we were all boys;

Our dads and grandpas were the men,

Standing strong and tall behind us,

A type of “God,” way-back when.

But “Time was” does not conveniently stay,

Time illusively passes, to pass away.

The dad and grandpa lie in yonder hill

We “boys” must their shoes try to fill.

Be strong “old boy.” Do God’s fine will.

– S D Herron, sermon

There was a day scores (hundreds?) of holiness churches had “Holiness Unto the Lord” at the front of the sanctuary. A number of the white frame or soft-brick structures have been re-placed & sadly, in some cases this significant sign was “mis-placed.” If your congregation believes in, & practices holy living, it’s a great plan to “say so” inside or outside the church. If that is currently impossible, use the Lord’s Day “hand-out” to alert visitors that holiness is available to them & available within these very walls.

“Thy Kingdom come…for Thine is the Kingdom…forever…” Hopefully readers recognize these as words – Key Words – in the prayer Jesus told His disciples. Matthew’s Gospel has “kingdom of heaven” 31 times (at least). Luke’s Gospel has “kingdom of God” 32 times. His Kingdom is important to Christ. Is It important to you – be honest? UP THE AISLE IN WHITE [part of Phillip/Heather’s wedding song]

Here she comes today up the aisle in white.

She’s lived for this moment a long, long time.

She’s going to marry this man for life.

Here he stands, waiting for her heart.

Waiting to do his manly part;

To Love her as Christ loved the church.

Marriage is a wonderful thing!

Marriage is a wonderful thing.

Its foundation stones were Divinely laid;

Its not an institution man has made.

Marriage is a wonderful thing.

It’s to be fruitful and to be multiplied;

That the Triune God may be glorified.

Marriage is a wonderful thing. – eab, March 1995

As a Christian you need to seriously question every “official” worldly story. “…The prince of the power of the air” [satan] is “the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience”(Eph 2.2). The world’s in charge of much (all?) of the news we get & is therefore aligned with satan, the liar. Much news & too much history were “made” or magnified by satan. The devil tells people what he wants to & we, as Christians, have been too gullible.

1Th 4.7

“For God hath not called us unto uncleanness,

but unto holiness.”

Don’t spend too much time improving water, electric power, bridges, etc. in the land where you’re a “missionary” – others (who don’t know Christ or are not ministers for Holiness) can do these. If you’re sanctified you see the need for the nationals of “x” country to be purified from carnality & filled with the Holy Spirit. Yes, even education can fit here. Educated heathen go to hell – but the heathen who’re redeemed & Spirit-filled don’t. You’re not there to improve “earth life” but to preach Eternal Life.

Returned last night from days in Ohio: first a granddaughter’s senior recital (May 30) & then helping Phillip & Heather move. Friday, May 31, I drove their older vehicle to Cincy, worked for hours & drove it back to Adams Co. Saturday, Jun 1, drove their old van pulling a trailer to Cincy, worked for hours & drove van to their home. As my car didn’t have enough gas, I drove older van to church & back on June 2. On Monday I was able to work only at their “new” house (sadly Phillip had to make a run), helping unload chicken coop, helping unload 2 other trailers, & do some straightening in shop. Yesterday I drove our car to Cincy, & my wife was able to rest at Hausman’s while Phillip & sons & I loaded boards, pipe, blocks, & misc. for a final trip for Adams Co. but the Bryans headed to our home this time. MOVING IS A JOB!!!

HORIZONS (an eab favorite)

Horizons we see but cannot meet,

Arrive where they were, they aren’t at your feet.

Horizons so far, so distant, so grand,

We never quite meet one, try as hard as we can,

Run ever so fast, climb ever so high,

Horizons tease onward, where mountain meets sky.

The horizon I speak of, of course is the one

Where geographic forms collide with the sun,

When the day star slips behind mineral and bark,

Its swift run, won, and leaves us in dark.

But another horizon exists and calls,

Where the laborious wave decidedly falls,

On the water-worn land of a battered old beach,

Where quartz and univalves mutually bleach.

The man who wanders there is pleased to have found,

An horizon he conquers; where sea meets the ground.

Where the Main laps or lunges at his feet in the sand,

And challenges ever the presence of land.

The horizon here found is attainable, close;

Not an illusion – a tangible coast.

A goal that is reached, a boundary that’s set;

This dry solid earth, this mysterious wet.

And man’s spirit here feels so light and so free,

At the very boundary, The boundary of earth and sea.
