“I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart;

I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation…”

Begin to commit a verse here & there (or a cluster of vv) to memory, including reference. Repeat them as you work, use them in prayer, & God may well begin to bring them back to you when you preach. – 8/19/19

“…We may in general prolong our days by choosing wisdom

& shorten them by choosing folly.”

– John Fletcher, /Works II/

What makes home schooling better? The parent/teacher? The curriculum? The texts? The atmosphere? The “field trips”? In some homes the schooling is better for one or more of the above reasons. But in 1000’s of homes the uppermost reason for superior learning is love.

No one loves a child like a parent does. – 8/19/19

“…Janus of the fatalists who wears two faces

an angel’s face & a devil’s face…full of duplicity.”

– John Fletcher, /Works II/

Have you ever

Have you ever been made to wonder

When you hear majestic thunder,

The size and the color

Of God’s celestial drum?

Or when you see the whirl

Of a humming bird (boy, girl?)

What exactly does a hummingbird hum?

What is the true color

Of a woodpecker’s collar,

As he rat-a-tat tats his way through wood?

Or why we systematically,

Dislike the bumble bee,

Forgetting his pollination is all good.

Is the bark that you see

On yonder stately tree,

Gray, grayish or an odd brown?

And after the new rain

Does Mr. tree seem vain

That his bark, now wet, is toned down?

When a native or foreign goose

Is running on the ground loose

Has such a waddle to his walk,

But when he bye-n-bye

Takes to his “native” sky

We stare, or really do we gawk ?

“Every great spiritual movement begins with the ‘downs-and-outs’

& ends with the ‘ups-and-ins.’ ”

– A L Vess

2Ti 4.2

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season;

reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering & doctrine.”

It seems there is “no end” of preachers whose “preaching” strikes someone’s fancy (Evangelical, Tongues, Baptist, Holiness, etc). But men who live as high or higher than they preach, are in limited supply. Oh, my holiness Brother (young enough to be my grandson/son, or my peer, or the few who are older) let us be on that list. – 8/19/19

to bring the same heathen practice over into their Christian Church.”

“…Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

“Do not err, my beloved brethren.”

37 of 46 “…Pride & arrogancy…do I hate”(Pro 8.13).

Hos 7.10 And the PRIDE of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.

“Gratitude is the blessing down in the soul that has to grow. And in order for it to grow it has to be expressed.”

– Carl M Eisenhart

Cars can be carnal expressions of the owner,

With flash, vroom, and speed.

Or, they can be necessary “evils.”

Bought and maintained by need.

It’s not the car alone (that can be seen)

The vehicle is the minor part,

Carnality can be “bright” or “black.”

The problem is always in the heart.

– eab, 8/17/09

“If damnation were not a reality then redemption would not have been necessary.

But death, judgment & hell are fearful realities.”

– Carl M Eisenhart

Holiness & worldliness are not found in the same life, at-the-same-time. (All who’re presently holy were once worldly & sadly, many worldly people, were once holy.) There’s an exception to the first statement – – – the new convert (without light on things “worldly”) may do old habits until God, in holiness, leads him upward & onward. – 8/18/19

Jam 3.11

“Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water & bitter?”

Many words are used to try to describe God – Isa 9.6 has a nice small list: “Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” – but no words or stack of words can properly picture Him. Man cannot describe the indescribable. If God fully described Himself man (at least while still in the flesh) could comprehend so little. However it is admirable to think, to meditate on His greatness, until we understand Him better above. – 8/18/19

“The sin question is settled in the holiness heart!”

– Ken Thompson sermon, IHC, 4/17/18

Some will compromise for a degree of money.

Others will compromise for a degree of fame.

And, sadly, some will compromise for a Degree. – 8/18/19

“Till I come, give attendance to reading,

to exhortation, to doctrine.”

Have you had a “date” with your Bible today? Hopefully a Bible rests near your favorite chair. Read consistently in It, in other words have a system. Read with an open mind: Who it the main character now? What do I need to see here? Where is this story/passage in comparison to others? When did this take place? Why (in your opinion) was this included? You don’t have to know the answers to ask these & other important questions; but questions are spring-boards onto truths – don’t be afraid to use them. – 8/13/19

“To reject the Son of God manifested in the Spirit as worldly Christians…do is a crime of equal magnitude with that of the Jews who rejected Christ manifested in the flesh.”

– John Fletcher, /Works III/

Never confuse reformation with regeneration. Any disciplined man can reform & man thinking people do. No man (regardless of a strong will & good intention) can regenerate (rebirth, i.e. be “born again”) himself. We can come (as the Holy Spirit draws us) to Christ, we can submit or subject our will to Him, but He (He alone) does the New Birth in response to our faith. – 8/14/19

“…Gospel Axioms: 1) Our salvation is originally of God’s free grace.

2) Our damnation is originally of our own free will.”

– John Fletcher, /Works II/

You, Lord, told Adam, Don’t – Adam did.

No wonder that he & his new Mrs hid

But finding a place sufficient to hide

Is impossible – they were the first ones who tried.

They now knew that satan had lied.

Something within them withered & died.

Oh, that they had done as You bid.

– eab, 8/15/17

“A sanctified man can sin

he may sin but no Christian must sin.”

– Howard Sweeten, /More Excellent Way/

Joh 19.35

“And he that saw it bare record & his record is true:

& he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.”

You “plan to,” you “hope to” get right with God someday – “As long as there’s life there’s hope, Right?” Not necessarily. You may be alive but unconscious. You might be alive but in too much pain to seriously confess your pride & carnal anger. You may not have time to call your b-n-l & beg his forgiveness. Stop putting off your hour of redemption “…Behold, now is the day of salvation”(2Co 6.2). – 8/15/19

“Are you preaching holiness?…You are a holiness preacher…in a holiness church. But are you preaching holiness?

– D Shelby Corlett

Everyone knows we’re flesh & bone;

But some won’t admit we’re not that alone.

The spirit, i.e. life returns to God when we die.

Our soul plunges to hell or soars on high.

We’re sooo different from ant, oak, or stone.

– eab, 8/12/19

“Let us come back to preaching rugged, biblical, convincing messages

on holiness as a second blessing.”

– D Shelby Corlett, Nazarene, 1944

Live to pray. Do not pray to live (only). Let prayer be the goal of everyday, the high spot of each night. Have a fat, flourishing, satisfied soul. Deny your soul nothing – let it feed daily, let it feed fully on God & the good things He adequately supplies His children. The Father does not want you to have a skinny soul. “…No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly”(Psa 84.11). – 8/14/19

Jas 5.16

“Confess your faults one to another…”

[ “faults” not “sins” as some (most?) modern translations have.]

Why do you read your Bible? “I have to, to get to heaven, don’t I?” Is that the way you felt about the letter from the pretty little lady you were dating? “Got another letter from Sally, I’ll have to read it.” No. Reading the note from the one you love made you feel closer to her. OK. Reading (with openness, a hunger for truth) will make you feel closer/draw you closer, to the One above whom you love. The devil will try to make Bible reading dry – don’t let him – satan is both your enemy & the enemy of God’s Holy Book. – 8/16/19

“He now became an assiduous student of the Bible keeping it before him on the counter of the shop in which he was employed…His mind was quickened…His aspirations for knowledge became intense”

– Able Stevens (about John Smith)

Be willing to call sin a sin; confess it & forsake it. But also be willing to call a fault a fault. They are not the same thing in spite of some contorted theology. BTW call sin a sin in your life AND a brother’s. Call a fault a fault in your life & his also. – 8/16/19

“Seek ye the LORD while he may be found,

call ye upon him while he is near:”

Only one person can keep you from believing in God Almighty. Only one person can keep you from believing His Holy Word. Only one person can keep you from receiving Eternal Life through obedience to the promises of Christ. Who is this powerful person? He is not a president, professor, a pastor, even a parent – YOU are that powerful person. Stop blaming others & Get/Stay right with God. He died for you! -8/9/19

“…Be not moved from your steadfastness either by names or numbers.

To judge of truth by popularity is absurd.”

– John Fletcher, /Works I/

You have two eyes? Praise God – some have one or none. Glasses? Be glad for them too.

You can hear (without hearing aid or even with one)? – Be grateful, today.

You have a sense of smell? Great! That so enhances the joy of eating.

You can speak – have a dear friend whose vocal cords are bowed – normal speech is gone.

You can feel. It’s simple but it’s a part of life’s pleasure. Praise the Lord. – 8/13/19

“…Can there be a greater sin…than to make the lying devil a god

and the true God a liar?”

– John Fletcher, /Works I/

“I can get along without Jesus,” you say?

Said when skies are blue, not gray.

Said when you breathe without thinking;

Said when your health is not a-sinking.

Said in the confidence of a youthful day;

Said when the things are going your way,

Said in blindness – you’re not really thinking –

A day comes, you’ll find your words a-stinking!

– eab, 8/12/19

“Sin can do no harm until it finds a lodging in the heart.

If you will let sin get once lodged in the heart it will eat its way to the outward life.”

– Uncle Buddy Robinson

Col 3.16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching & admonishing

one another in psalms and hymns & spiritual songs…”

If you’re devotions are dry (all of us have better & poorer days) allow me to suggest you set aside (temporarily & only temporarily) your Bible & pick up what’s probably the second most inspiriting book in your house – an old hymnal. Allow yourself to read hymn #1 (singing is fine in church, maybe even here but many of the quality hymns were not written to be sung – music was added later). They were poems – aye poems from the heart of a poet/poetess. So, read them. Read them slowly & prayerfully. The Holy Spirit may speak to your heart, to your dryness, before you finish # 2. – 8/13/19

“This destruction of sin must take place in this world, for we read that nothing unholy or unclean or that defileth or maketh a lie or worketh abomination can enter into heaven (Rev. 21:27).”

“Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit;

but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.”

Guard what you read. And, if anything, guard more what children read. Modern fiction books written by sinners should be judiciously avoided. Modern fiction penned by professing “christians” should be read with a willingness to cull, as needed. Read that “innocent looking” book before giving it to a child or grandchild. “But…But…I know the writer or know the writer’s a good person.” Easy. The soul of that child is worth far more than your confidence in any author. The devil slyly inserts his garbage in “good” books unless the writer has been sanctified holy & is current with God. 8/10/19

“We are not diplomats but prophets &

our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum.”

Don’t feel sorry for me when I don’t attend your fair

I have no desire to be caught there.

It’s noisy, costs money, some sights are “a sight”

Bad enough by day, probably worse by night.

False fronts, sleaze, gambling, etc. I can’t bear.

– eab, 8/12/19

“Whatever the sin-made world happens to be clamoring after at the moment is

cleverly shown to be the very thing the gospel offers only the religious product is better.”

– A W Tozer

People are attracted to men who claim to be “men of God” – can turn out very badly.

People are attracted to men who truly are men of God – this is better.

People are attracted to God – the Best, the very Best. – 8/12/19

Isa 55.2a

“Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread?

& your labor for that which satisfieth not?”

“Much ado about nothing” – Shakespeare, not a favorite author by far, once wrote “Much ado about nothing” – in this he was right. So much of the our world is spending huge amounts of time, gross stacks of dollars preparing for & advertising, acting out, screaming/clapping for, crying (as it closes), tearing down, reviewing the success of (or lamenting the failure of) said event, scheduling next season’s successor, & starting all over again. 100’s of times these actions are repeated of events which should not have happened at all & in the annuls of true history will receive (rightly so) little-to-no notice. Please Believer, think about what YOU commit time & energy to attend or promote. Is It Really Nothing? 8/12/19

“The Methodists (at Barbados) were called ‘Hallelujahs’

Jesus Christ was the most wonderful Man/God to ever trod earth. Christ Jesus is the most wonderful God/Man who inhabits eternity. He will come again to earth, in God’s perfect timing. Have you asked Him to live in your heart? (He already lives/has lived in millions of hearts across earth.)

Today is *just* the right time to Pray! – 8/12/19

Does a certain date stand-out in your life? August 10th stands out for me & has for decades. It was 1953; our family took my only brother, Keith, to the Zanesville, OH train station. He’d joined the army & was leaving for far-away Washington state. He was just 16, as far as we know had lied about his age & someone signed for him. He returned once alive & then returned to the same RR station in a government-issue casket, killed when a tank rolled over on him in black-out maneuvers. Life has never been the same. My oldest grandson bears his name & that’s a nice connection for a bad page in my young life. – 8/10/19

Php 4.11

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned,

in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”

Be content. “I don’t know how to be.” Sorry, that’s not 100% your fault in the sense that you grew up in “buy buy,” “shop shop” age. Salesmen made a living making people want this, crave that. But, you’re an adult now. It’s time to learn to be content. You’re no better than Paul but you can strive to be like him “…I have learned…to be content” Php 4.11). Start learning contentment by being thankful. Thank people (important one & “nobodies”) & Thank God everyday for health (“It’s not good.” I’m sorry but could it be worse?). Thank God everyday for food (“It’s not my favorite.” I have favorites too but thank Him for what you have that you DO like.) Learn to be content. 8/10/19

About professing sanctification “…they should have an especial care to avoid all appearance of boasting & to speak more loudly & convincingly by their lives than they can do by their tongues”

– Able Stevens

STOP believing official stories. Officials (governments [world-wide], religious organizations even called “christian” ones, the “sciences” etc.) put out stories they want us to believe. Sometime it may be highly fabricated, sometimes a sly mix of fact & fiction. Stop cooperating. THINK. Think for yourself. Always ask “Who benefits?” We’ve been lied to murders, wars, supposed adventures. Stop believing.

NOTE – 3 newspapers carried the account of my brother’s death – they didn’t have the same “facts.” It was a valuable lesson (age 11) to not believe all that’s in black & white. STOP believing official stories! – 8/10/19

Dying might be thought of as approaching the end of the hall where an elevator is. If you’re fully obeying God, you get into His “lift” & swish upward. Wonderful!!!

Friend – please harken – if you’re not obeying & not believing, the elevator door doesn’t open for heaven but you drop down a dark “elevator shaft” into hell. Horrible!!! – 8/8/19

Heb 9.27

“…Is appointed unto men once to die,

but after this the judgment:”

There are mobsters, red-light “madams” & war “heroes” in hell. I’m sorry – they didn’t have to go. It seems worse (possibly a mistaken idea) but hell also has former pastors & S.S. teachers – perhaps from the church down the road. They also didn’t have to go but “…the cares of this world & the deceitfulness of riches & the lusts of other things…” (Mar 4.19) entered their hearts & they lost out with God. – 8/8/19

Home schooling? Don’t overlook Vocabulary Cards. Buy or have student make his own from a dictionary. The ability to read (pronouncing properly) & understand the meanings of words is so much a part of being educated. On 11/25/11 I finished going through an older dictionary highlighting all the one syllable words – an interesting, informative exercise. Might offer something like this for home school extra credit.- 8/8/19

“Remember NOW  thy Creator…” [emphasis added]

It was interesting to see a sweet granddaughter Natasha, now Mrs Lucas Wilson (8/2/19), put “her signature” on her wedding. She wore no veil. She was barefoot as she was married. She had no programs. She threw no bouquet. No garter was removed & thrown. Her dad prayed a prayer in place of “her mother & I.” The immediate family gathered on the platform for another prayer. I doubt I’ve ever heard a better wedding message/charge given to a couple. And lastly, but far from a “least,” modesty was gratefully apparent with both bride & her attendants – Praise the Lord. – 8/7/19

“…Abroad, those who go a little deeper into inward Christianity than the generality of their neighbors are called pietists or mystics, as commonly as they are called Methodists in Eng.”

We hear about absent Dads – men totally missing from a home. I do not question it has a horrible affect. Some Dads are there physically – but are absent from their kid’s education. Are sadly absent in discipline. Are absent in the money management of the home. Most sadly some men are absent from Family Altar – not heading the home in Worship of God, not burdened in prayer for children, not their child’s 1st minister. Dad (reading this) are YOU absent from the home in any of the above? Come back, Come back. – 8/7/19

“…If we give over following after holiness & do not continue to leave all for Christ’s sake, may we not forfeit our title to glory as the servant who had 10,000 talents forgiven him forfeited his pardon!”

Religion and wars

Religion and wars seem opposite at first sight –

As opposite as day and night.

But they’ve been partners in the past,

And will be – till the Lord comes at last.

Many a saint has through them found “his end,”

And more sinners to hell they did send.

There are some occupations in which you (believer in Christ, or not) should not work – they destroy. The production, trucking, & selling of hard drinks are horribly wrong. They break homes, break cars, break bodies. There are some occupations with which some might consider “neutral” (neither harming nor helping people). In light of Eternity Life & a good life on earth there probably are few-if-any truly neutral jobs. Seek & find for yourself (& children/grandkids as you have opportunity) only work that helps people here & or surely helps them for eternity. – 8/7/19

There’s a place to memorize: colors, geometric shapes, alphabet, Scriptures, spelling “rules,” multiplication tables, states, river/mountain locations, state capitols, “kingdoms” of plant/animal, etc. Some “educators” continue to emphasis memorization & there’s much to be said for it. But there’s a time to get beyond memorized “who” “what” “where” & “when” to the all important “Why.” True teachers delight in helping students Think. “Think outside the box.” What’s a box? A box can be religious beliefs with which you were raised; you never thought them through & accepted them as true, nor have you thought of them enough to reject them. Churches &/or denominations are boxes. You should examine them. Schools are clearly boxes. They took, told you this was true, fed you “facts” (what kid doesn’t believe a textbook?), sent you out indoctrinated. Hopefully it’s not too late for you to scrutinize what you were told. Break out of that box & think. – 1/7/18
