Mat 7.7 +

Mat 7.7

“Ask & it shall be given you; seek & ye shall find;

knock & it shall be opened unto you.”

“…Pride [is] that odious vice which feeds on the praises it slyly procures,

lives by the applause it has meanly courted…”

– John Fletcher, /Works 3/

27 of 46 “…Pride & arrogancy…do I hate”(Pro 8.13).

Jer 13.17 But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your PRIDE; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away captive.

“The books of Moses are chiefly historical;

the epistles of St. Paul chiefly doctrinal.”

– John Fletcher, /Works 3/

apple or  corE ?

Which would you rather be

The apple or the core,

Bright and shiny to the eye,

Then eaten and heard of no more?

Or bearing for the future,

Seeds for the next crop & tree,

An apple or the core,

Which would you rather be?

– eab, 7/10/13

If you’re a single man from a broken home who’s dating a girl from an unbroken home, you should become a serious student of what the NT teaches about marriage. Your parent’s failure to stay married isn’t your fault (never allow satan to “saddle” you with this) but it does make you vulnerable. The devil may tell you (after marriage when you & your wife disagree) “Dad & Mom couldn’t make it, guess I can’t either.” The devil is a liar. Your marriage can work, with the Lord’s help. But it will help you, your wife, & her parents, if you after study, are firmly convinced that divorce is never, repeat Never, an option.

“Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing

& obtaineth favor of the LORD.”

My wife (unlike many ladies) doesn’t mind telling her age. If you consider 7 the perfect number, today she has 7 decades, + 7 yrs on this, the 7th month. Our first date was at a college function in Feb. 1959. Something was funny – & if you know me you know I have loud laugh. She’d probably heard it on classroom floor or the dining hall but it was the 1st time she been seated right beside such noise. She was a bit startled but we had a 2nd date & – – – I’m still privileged to still date this lady. She’s been a great wife, a fine mother, a good cook, etc. Love you, Babe as you enter this new yr of your life. And wish you all the Blessings of heaven!

“The enemies of the Gospel have come into the church as angles of light. Infiltration & espionage have been successful…posses[ing] the field by…pleasant phrases & deceptive use of Christian terminology.”

– Carl McIntire

Parents: What do YOU do when your child throws you a new “may I” question? (One you never expected or didn’t expect it yet.) 1.) Give an automatic “no.” 2.) Give an automatic “yes” – with your mind pre-occupied with your phone conversation/text. 3.) Say, “I’ll have to think & pray about that.” Then seriously seek what God wants you to do. Parenting is SERIOUS business.

– 7/10/19

“Then it was the Bible being added to by the traditions of men. Now it is the Bible being torn to pieces by the criticisms of men…the truth & authority of the Bible are destroyed.”

“The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead,

she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.”

Dad, if you have no manual skill to pass on to your son, I’d encourage you to prayerfully chose a trade or skill you’d like to master & you two learn it together. “I’d be embarrassed.” Possibly. But would it not be better to be a little embarrassed when he is 8, as to have taught him nothing when he leaves home at 18? Or chose (again with prayer) a skill in which he’d like to be competent & you learn it with him. You’ll make mistakes, but even those (if you’re able to laugh at yourself) can be memory makers. – 7/3/19

“Philosophers, unable to guide mankind to true happiness,

are vainly searching after it themselves.”

– John Fletcher, /Works 3/

My wife & I returned early Monday afternoon from staying with her mother several days so her sister & b-n-l could attend Camp Meeting at Pell City. Also because Linda Bragg, who’s a great help to my m-n-l, took her elderly dad, Bro Baker, to the same camp. Sooo grateful for a safe trip down mid crowds of cars. And happy also for a safe trip home. Left early to beat the heat as our car AC is not running right. This also gave us less traffic. Came home to a garden which God watered. Picked small basket of snap peas (enjoyed a few for lunch) & several green beans from the earlier plants. Praise the Lord. 7/9/19

“…It is necessary to eradicate pride from the heart & to subdue the irregular appetites of our degenerate nature. This is undoubtedly the most difficult task to be accomplished in life…”

– John Fletcher, /Works 3/

REFLECTING ON THE YUKON

The water below me is “coffee, with cream.”

But the water out there is blue, it would seem.

Maybe beauty is not always in the eye;

Sometimes it’s a reflection of God’s perfect sky. – eab, July ‘96

“He said…‘Are you going to persist in the ministry without the Divine preparation…?’

Sanctification makes you meet for the Master’s use & prepares you for every good work…”

– J B McBride

The amount of “skin” I see (in pics & in person) on those attending careful churches, doesn’t predict a bright future for the holiness movement. “Preacher, it’s more than clothing!” Of course it is. But, think about this, a desire to wear worldly styles (on any but new converts) suggests a deeper, more serious problem. Please die out to this world & make every preparation to enjoy a holy heaven. – 7/9/19

Rev 6.11

“…White robes were given unto every one of them & it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season…”

“One can be joyful, happy, & congenial; but there is no place where we can be trifling,

light & funny & live in this inner-circle with Jesus.’”

– J B McBride

Jesus did Not say, “…Love the Lord thy God…” (Mar 12.30) with Most of thy heart, Nor with 90% of thy soul, Nor with almost-all of thy mind, Nor 99% of thy strength. He called for all, All, ALL, A L L. Is this a reality, my Friend, in your life? In mine? “Amen” or “O, me” – which will it be?  – 7/9/19

Jer 13.9 Thus saith the LORD, After this manner will I mar the PRIDE of Judah, and

Stop going into debt. “When?” Now! This July 2019. If you can’t pay off the balance when the credit card is due, don’t place buy it. “But I NEED it.” Save for it. Buy it next month. (By then, you may’ve found it at Good Will for pennies-on-the-dollar, been given it by a friend, or figured out you don’t need it afterall.) Learn to say “No” to yourself. Learn to say “No” to your wife. Learn to say “No” to the kids. They do NOT have to have everything the “Jones” or “Rodriquez” family has. Have you tried to make one? Tried to invent a way around this? Or have you prayed to be content? – 7/3/19

Eternity

  1. Ever tried to see, to imagine, to grip,
  2. This thing called “Eternity” – beyond time’s lip,
  3. Ever thought what God was doing in the past?
  4. Reading. Reading what? He knows all – first-to-last.
  5. No human (limited as we are) to earth-time, earth-space,
  6. In any way can grasp God’s Purpose, Creation, Grace.
  7. Tomorrow passes us. “Timeless” we speak of but do not know
  8. Yet God here, everywhere lies beyond time’s narrow flow. – eab, 7/5/12

Don’t accept labels opponents try to stick on you. We’re not “protestants” (that’s a label). We’re believers in Christ & His Word, similar to thousands of His followers who never were a part of the catholic system. We’re not “homophobes.” We’ve had the good sense to follow the Biblical teaching: one man, one wife for life. We’re not “anti-immigrant.” We’re anti /illegal/ immigrant. We’re not “hoarders.” We know enough to save for a winter, a sever storm, a dry spell, a depression, etc. – 7/3/19

Mar 10.25

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle,

than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

A female saint exceeds the world’s “lady.” Things don’t have to be perfect (décor, atmosphere, etc.) for her to act perfectly. She always dresses modestly (even when hard at work), always sits like a lady, & she helps make others at ease. She is the product of the Holy Spirit’s Finishing School. – 7/5/19

“What church or congregation has any respect for a minister who trims his preaching

to the itching ears of the monied man in his church?”

– Carl McIntire

Rejoice. The perfect world maybe right-a-round-the-corner. For some of you it could start within a week. While your family weeps, missing your saintly presence, heaven will be rejoicing: another Brother, another Sister has made it to his/her eternal home exactly for what they had lived for years. – 7/5/19

It has only one message, ‘Thus saith the Lord.’ ”

Act 5.29 +

Act 5.29

“Then Peter & the other apostles answered & said,

‘We ought to obey God rather than men.’ ”

When government says it’s OK to kill your baby but God (Bible) calls murder a sin, who do you believe?

When government says it’s OK to kill an enemy but God tells you to love an enemy, who do you believe?

When government says it’s OK to D&R but God calls remarriage “adultery” (Mar10.11) who do you believe? – 7/4/19

“The church is weak, dark, poor, & imperfect,

because it prays little.”

– Adam Clarke, /ChristianTheology/

A man may lie (lie “for-the-fun-of-it”) to see if you’ll believe him. If/when he finds you gullible, he may “feed you” a larger lie, seeing if you’ll bite again. He could keep this up till he sees you’ll believe everything he says or till you awaken & know him a liar. Now – change “man” to “science” & “lie” to “theory.” “…Science falsely so called” (1Ti 6.20b) fed us a theory & we swallowed it. They’ve felt free to give a theory based on a theory & sadly too many accept that also. It’s past time Bible-believing, Bible-reading christians, doubt & reject “scientific” theories & take the Biblical more literally. Past time!

– 7/3/19

God has multitudes that will never sell their souls…for any price.”

THE FEE

What yon sinner, does mistakenly consider

His finest hour, the apex of personal power;

He may well live to see,

Was a moment, from which he’ll later repent,

For which he’ll feel sorrow, in a future tomorrow;

And for which sadly, hell is the fee.

– eab, 7/5/19

“The soul that will indulge in lightness & foolish conversation & idle away God’s valuable time

in loitering around with the world’s crowd, can never speak ‘as the oracles of God.’”

– J B McBride

Dad, teach your son a skill – something he can do with his hands. Let him see you doing this work & enjoying the practice of it. It may be building an item which your farm, home, or work needs. It may be a simple chore or a complicated 3-4 step action. Thus you’ll give him an ability, also a confidence in himself, & a memory of “working with dad” when him has his own home, or when you’ve gone to another world. If the skill is something you learned from /your/ dad, tell him so as you pass it on. – 7/3/19

Joh 8.44

“…Your father the devil…no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie,

he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar & the father of it.”

“One cannot live in such close fellowship [‘Where Jesus is ’tis Heaven there’]

with Him & go where the world goes.”

– J B McBride

The devil lies. Never, Never forget that. He tries to say God’s ways are stupid when in reality, His Ways are the wisest, most money saving, least nerve fraying ways on earth. The devil also tells sinners they’re free, all-the-while binding them with habits which get harder & harder to break. (Thank God though, the Spirit can help you – when you want help – to break the strongest & longest held habits you have!) – 7/5/19

I’m sorry you spent the dollars to be tattooed. You wasted your money. Tattoos may draw attention but that generally comes from the wrong people. I’m also sorry you endured the pain this required. You may not care, but there are many of us who’re un-impressed with the glob of ink on your arm, leg, or shoulder. God can forgive you for messing-up the clear skin He gave – let me encourage you to ask Him. No question, you can die a christian, but in the mean-time you may Wish you could cover up the tattoos – 7/3/19

THE SPIRIT

It means so little,

When so little meet,

If the Spirit meets them not.

But when two or three

And the Spirit meet,

The meeting means a lot. -eab, July ’74

you must not look for any revival.”

– J. Wesley, quoted by M W Knapp

I have an apology to make if you took my Literature class. In one or more I proclaimed that fine arts include literature, this connecting it with music, painting, & sculpture. Please forgive this mistake (I was mistaken myself – was not purposely misleading you). The Bible & a good bit of thinking these last few yrs, has helped me to see that Literature (humanly speaking includes the Bible) is so different from music/painting/sculpture. God “invented” words; they stand apart from the other 3 (He spoke the 1st word & will have the “last word”). One can’t speak music, or speak painting or sculpture. – 7/3/19

– Frances Havergal, quoted by M W Knapp

God is the most Authentic Being you can ever know – Do you know Him?

God is the greatest Counselor you can possibly have – Are you listening to His sage advice?

God knows more about real history than all humans combined – Are you learning from His Book

(God also knows all about all fake news, who is “creating” these lies, & has stated all liars will be damned.) – 7/3/19

You can be a male but never get to date that attractive girl. You can date “Miss Sweetie” but not become engaged. You can marry but never be called the great name – “Daddy.” You can become a dad but never proceed to grandpa. You can be a grandpa but not live to be called great grandpa.

I thank God I was born male, dated my high school Sweetheart (married 58 yrs as of 6/30/19), became Dad (4 times), have be a “Gramp” 18 times (not counting lads & lassies who married into the clan) & am a great grandpa twice “& holding.” – 6/27/19

TO MY MARTHA

When you sang “Whither thou goest” you didn’t know

How far away we’d trek, where we’d both go.

But you were serious (& I’m glad you were).

The years, yea decades, went by in a whirl

And you’re still by my side, when I walk slow.

Whisner & Webb, that June, tied a good knot.

(To un-tie it we’ve never once sought)

They’re both gone, & the two Jerries too

But our vows are as good as when “brand new.”

To go though thick & thin, you’ve not “forgot.”

Goest? Kentucky, Ohio & then Hobe we found

Ohio again (three schools), then Tennessee bound

Alaska (summer only) then to Loogootee to go.

LA (Mississippi) to more Bible Literature know.

South Carolina, South Dakota weren’t close as sound.

Indiana a second time, Kansas, Hobe (“times two”)

Arizona – to be associate to younger man was new.

Canada called, was enjoyed, back to homeland,

Last pastorate: six years, retirement at hand.

Bryan bungalow, white fixer-upper, “trimmed” in blue.

Happy Anniversary, Babe, eight years beyond the gold,

From this your country boy, who’s now grown old.

I love you more than when we both were young

When you “Whither thou goest,” unknowingly sung.

Still rejoicing, still glad you to have & to hold. – 6/30/19

“Paul, a man with a Greek mind & a Roman will, & a Hebrew soul & a Christian experience said, ‘Awake to righteousness & sin not’!”

– Andrew Johnson, Methodist preacher (eab heard in person)

Once upon a time (Not all “once-upon-a-times” are fiction.) the Bryans had 2 little girls. They grew up, married, & God allowed them to have their own little girls – who also grew. A week ago this afternoon [note date] 2 of those (# 3 for our older daughter & #2 for our younger daughter) graduated from high school in a ceremony arranged by CHEO (Christian Home Educators of Ohio) at Mt Vernon, OH. Happy for them both, for their parents, & for the nice venue provided. With these 2 graduations Martha & I passed the half-way point in grandkids graduated from high school.

Did you sleep in a bed last night? “It was too soft.” “It needs to be replaced.” “It is not a famous brand.” Stop – – – Answer the question – Did you sleep in a bed last night? Yes? Be thankful! Some tried to sleep in a foldout chair in a hospital room waiting for someone to die.  Some tried to sleep in a van or car because they can’t afford the rent in the tourist-town where they work. Some tried to sleep in a city rescue mission. And some tried to sleep under a bridge or on a park bench. If you had a bed, Thank God for it. Amen?

Where do your children see you the most happy? 1.) At a formal (quiet, hear-a-pin-drop) kind of church? 2.) At a contemporary (“wally-wally, bing-bang”) kind of church?  3.) At a God-worshipping church (whether holy quietness or shouts of rightness)? – – – Or 4.) Someplace other than church?

MY GOD

My God is the God of the Sacred page

He, ageless, is the Lord of every age

He pre-dates the gods of sports and stage

He’ll out-live all gods of war and rage

His love can make “heaven” of a cage

His grace has no adequate gage

His reward exceeds every earthly wage

He has no equal – my Lord of Sacred page. – eab, 6/21/11

THE START

God can take all your wrongs

And give you a right heart

He can “oil up” your whistle

Trade a flower for your thistle

Remove that carnal bristle.

And, Friend – – – that is just the start!

“…Everything we have ever heard in a Holiness tent meeting, every…dream & foretaste of heaven…when we got loose & got out in the aisle & got our hands in the air…& felt that God was all around & heaven was not 10 feet away, will that day become a glorious reality!”

– Lawrence B Hicks, “There Must Be…Somewhere”

Negative: “I don’t think God cares about such /little/ details.”

Can we be friends with people who don’t agree with us? On everything? We better hope so – or we’ll have few (if any) friends.  Many of my friends & I agree on a fairly high percentage of things. A great friend & I disagreed on two important issues: divorce & remarriage & the importance of the KJV. Hot subjects with some, but our friendship survived. Another friend & I disagreed on facial hair yet our friendship remained intact. Give people room to disagree. You don’t have to dot all their “i’s” or cross all their “t’s” to like them. Honor where you do agree, & be gracious where you don’t.
