“Till I come, give attendance to reading,

to exhortation, to doctrine.”

Have you had a “date” with your Bible today? Hopefully a Bible rests near your favorite chair. Read consistently in It, in other words have a system. Read with an open mind: Who it the main character now? What do I need to see here? Where is this story/passage in comparison to others? When did this take place? Why (in your opinion) was this included? You don’t have to know the answers to ask these & other important questions; but questions are spring-boards onto truths – don’t be afraid to use them. – 8/13/19

“To reject the Son of God manifested in the Spirit as worldly Christians…do is a crime of equal magnitude with that of the Jews who rejected Christ manifested in the flesh.”

– John Fletcher, /Works III/

Never confuse reformation with regeneration. Any disciplined man can reform & man thinking people do. No man (regardless of a strong will & good intention) can regenerate (rebirth, i.e. be “born again”) himself. We can come (as the Holy Spirit draws us) to Christ, we can submit or subject our will to Him, but He (He alone) does the New Birth in response to our faith. – 8/14/19

“…Gospel Axioms: 1) Our salvation is originally of God’s free grace.

2) Our damnation is originally of our own free will.”

– John Fletcher, /Works II/

ADAM DID

You, Lord, told Adam, Don’t – Adam did.

No wonder that he & his new Mrs hid

But finding a place sufficient to hide

Is impossible – they were the first ones who tried.

They now knew that satan had lied.

Something within them withered & died.

Oh, that they had done as You bid.

– eab, 8/15/17

“A sanctified man can sin

he may sin but no Christian must sin.”

– Howard Sweeten, /More Excellent Way/

Joh 19.35

“And he that saw it bare record & his record is true:

& he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.”

You “plan to,” you “hope to” get right with God someday – “As long as there’s life there’s hope, Right?” Not necessarily. You may be alive but unconscious. You might be alive but in too much pain to seriously confess your pride & carnal anger. You may not have time to call your b-n-l & beg his forgiveness. Stop putting off your hour of redemption “…Behold, now is the day of salvation”(2Co 6.2). – 8/15/19

“You can no more grow sin out of the heart

than you can grow rotten out of an apple.”

– Howard Sweeten, /More Excellent Way/

“Till I come, give attendance to READING,

to exhortation, to doctrine.” [emphasis added]

Fame is like a river, that beareth up things light & swollen

& drowns things weighty & solid.”

– Francis Bacon

If you parent, find the Bible boring don’t be surprised if you child doesn’t warm to It. If on the other hand, you share with your mate at the breakfast (dinner or supper) table a recent “jewel” you found in God’s eternal Book, you may be planting a seed so that Johnny or Suzie will dig into the Bible on their own. Won’t that be wonderful? Well – – – wouldn’t it?

– eab, 3/2/19

Prosperity is the blessing of the Old Testament,

adversity is the blessing of the New.”

– Francis Bacon

SAME GOD

If I were to meet her* I couldn’t speak

Her language; could only smile & nod.

But she, praying in the Himalayan foothills,

Has my same Father; we’ve the same God.

* [Praying the Lord of Harvest to send forth prayers

in the foothills of the Himalayas, this AM.]

– eab, 3/3/19

“When a man is not really right

he’d rather not meet the true prophet of God.”

– V O Agan, sermon, 2/12/98

The Lord’s allowed this country boy to minister in several countries, among them Russia. (I first heard of it in the 4th grade, never expecting to visit it.) I enjoyed seeing their land & waterways; I liked the people; I relished their borsch but I didn’t buy a dacha or a hectare of land. Why? My home was elsewhere. Please use care, Friend. Don’t become attached to this earth. If you love Christ, your home is above the blue.

– eab, 3/1/19

Mat 7.22

“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? & in thy name have cast out devils? & in thy name done many wonderful works?”

You had a friend/relative who was raised Biblical on “A” & “B.” They chaffed. They wanted an easier way to be a “christian” & moved to a church which smiled on their choices. They died. It’s normal to hope they went to heaven but you know their year’s-old-change was on purpose. I beg of you – don’t assume YOU also can neglect the Bible on “A” & “B.” Your friend/relative may have gone below (there’s nothing you or they can change now) but *you* can so love Jesus that “A” & “B” will be easily & lovingly done for His sake. Please, Friend, do NOT assume they’re in heaven if they rejected Scriptural teachings.

– eab, 3/3/19

“You can tell a false prophet not so much by what he preaches

as by what he doesn’t preach.”

What are Gospel ministers? Men that ‘bear witness to the truth’…‘rightly divide the word of truth’…

– John Fletcher, /Works I/

“Reading, Writing, & ‘rithmatic” 3R’s – that order is not just picturesque, it’s 100% accurate. The 3R’s instructed & yes blessed, millions of kiddos (grandparents & great grandparents, yours & mine) in days gone past. Modernity with its near worship of “science” (“science says” has too often replaced “Scripture says”) & “the higher maths” (with their humanly created symbol-languages) has subverted this order.

– eab, 11/23/18

What are Gospel ministers? ‘fellow helpers to the truth’…‘spread forth the words of truth’…‘are valiant for the truth…’

– John Fletcher, /Works I/

TO INSPIRE

Help me Lord to preach,

Help me Lord to inspire,

Help me Lord to encourage,

Help me Lord to enquire

About their souls, about their life,

“How goes the battle? Are you winning the strife?”

– eab, 11/25/06

Do Likewise

A wedding can be a lovely thing;

I know; I’ve seen a few.

A wife-to-be meets her groom

“ Boom ” a home “brand-new.”

But the truly pretty stuff

Is the older man & his oldish wife

Still in love through thick & thin

Married: one, happy, holy, long life!

– – – Go Thou And Do Likewise!

– eab, 10/14/18

“One is sometimes (not often) glad not to be a great theologian;

one might so easily mistake it for being a good Christian.”

– C S Lewis, /Reflection on t Psalms/

Act 8.28

“Was returning, and

sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.”

3R’s # 2 – Reading is the King of all subjects. It is paramount. (If Reading is King – it surely is – Writing is Queen.) Once you can read, you can learn all that is important in this world.  More importantly you can read the Bible, the Road Map, the Instruction Book to the world above. Modernity as long ago as the 40’s (speaking from experience) de-emphasized phonics & stopped teaching diacritical markings. Christians, you & I were the losers. Teach children to read, teach them to enjoy reading, & let them see you read.

– eab, 11/23/18

“I take this [Psa 19] to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and

one of the greatest lyrics in the world.”

– C S Lewis, /Reflection on t Psalms/

3R’s # 3 – Writing allows you to express yourself constructively, intelligently, & with a degree of permanency – as far as this life is concerned. It is the foundation of literature & “literature is the written record of man’s best words & deeds” (definition I’ve known since the 60s but whose author is not recalled). Your thoughts, placed in writing can bless your family & others for years to come. And you will find that Francis Bacon was so right when he wrote, “Writing makes an exact man.”

“Till I come, give attendance to reading,

to exhortation, to doctrine.”

To the pastor who hates to read – Do not read a text in church until you’ve read it over & over to yourself. Read it aloud to yourself or if your wife’s a better reader, read it to her (just the two of you). Read the Bible with an audio program playing the same chapter. Don’t feel that you must pronounce every name or “you’re not reading.” It’s better to read 5 verses with understanding than 25 without understanding. Most of all, talk to God about your reading problem. Almost everyone can improve & more so, with His help.

– eab, 3/24/18

“God gave them the victory but they had to fight the battle.”

– Charlie Haire (uncertain date or locale)

Sadly, many a person’s body has been enslaved. Slave’s bodies are forced to do tiring tasks. But slave masters can’t chain the mind. God made the mind a citadel, a fortress, designed so nobody can control it. Then some wicked soul “invented” brain-washing, a means of controlling one’s thinking. It’s terribly when the mind as well as the body is enslaved. But it’s most sad when a person actually subjects themselves, willingly, to having their mind bent; when they allow substance, cult, or entertainment to darken & drain their minds, while they “think” they’re free.

Joseph’s “Step-Son”

A carpenter and his good wife

“Directed” the Lord’s early life.

Joseph taught Him to saw,

To use chisel and maul,

A “Step-Son” – without any strife. Mar 6.3

Help me   Apr.

Help me to feed what You want fed,

Help me to say what You want said,

Help me to lead where You want led,

Guided by Your heart, not my head.

Luk 18.1

“And he spake a parable unto them to this end,

that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”

The world seems fascinated by numbers. Numbers have become more prevalent the last several decades. As Christ’s followers we honor, read, & remember The Word of God. We adore Christ as “the Word… made flesh…” (Joh 1.14). Therefore we’re not charmed by numbers. We use them, but neither fear nor worship them. We don’t allow numbers (nor arrangements thereof) to run or ruin our lives nor our futures.

– eab, 4/1/18

“…in the reign of Henry VIII an honest farmer once gave a cart load of hay

for one leaf of St. James Epistle in English.”

– Gilchrist Lawson, /Thoughts About the Bible

My dear fellow followers of Christ, Is it time to stop believing that good comes from power-politics: Educational politics, Church politics, a-n-d  Political politics? Christ, the coming King of earth, will be the only Correct Answer for this sin wrecked & sin racked world. Spend more time in prayer (not “formal” words but soul searching, self-less soul humility) & little-to-zero time in Democrat or Republican struggles.
