56 years ago it was 1956.  Today 56 years ago 5 young men were martyred taking the gospel to the Auca Indians (commonly so called). They were (alphabetical order)

            Jim Elliot,

            Pete Fleming,

            Ed McCully,

            Nate Saint,

            Roger Youderian

 

– killed in Ecuador, along the CurarayRiver.  If you have not read Jim’s widow’s book Through Gates of Splendor (1957) it is well worth reading

Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian were killed this date (1/8/1956) along the Curaray River in Ecuador, South America.
