Five Martyrs

ON THIS DATE

Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, Roger Youderian (names arranged alphabetically, not for other reasons) were killed 1/8/1956 in the South American country of Ecuador while trying to reach the Auca Indians for Jesus Christ. 

I remember this event – a modern martyrdom along the Curaray River.   Jim’s widow, Elizabeth, wrote Through Gates of Splendor (1957).   

 

“The happiest day of my life was the day I accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour

for the remission of my sins, duly repented for…”  – Roger Youderian

1956

56 years ago it was 1956.  Today 56 years ago 5 young men were martyred taking the gospel to the Auca Indians (commonly so called). They were (alphabetical order)

            Jim Elliot,

            Pete Fleming,

            Ed McCully,

            Nate Saint,

            Roger Youderian

 

– killed in Ecuador, along the CurarayRiver.  If you have not read Jim’s widow’s book Through Gates of Splendor (1957) it is well worth reading

Jim Elliot on this date, 3/15/1950, is said to have written in his journal

“The believer is a displaced person. He loses the controlling features of both environment and heredity.”

Elliot leads the alphabetical list of the five American missionaries martyred in Ecaudor: others were Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian.

Jim Elliot – wrote, Feb. 8, 1950

Jim Elliot, on this date, 2/8/1950, is reported to have penned the following in his journal:

 

“Sin in a Christian makes God seem distant, deaf.

In the body, sin saps animation, as cancer.

In the soul, sin stifles the affections; as corrosion in the spirit,

sin solidifies the attitudes, as a callous.”

 

Jim Elliot (better known, in part for:  a. alphabetical arrangement,  b. his wife’s writing about him, and  c. this his journal) was one of the five American missionaries killed along the Curaray River, Ecuador, South America, 1/8/1956.  They were Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, Roger Youderian.

(The a.b.c. above is not anti Elliot, rather is trying to balance out for the other men.)

Said to have been written by Jim on the date, 5/2/1949.  He was later a missionary and a martyr along with Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian.  They were North Americans trying to reach South Americans for Jesus Christ.

 Jim Elliot was born in Porland, Oregon, 10/8/1927 and died a martyr’s death 1/8/1956 at Curaray River, Equador.  (His fellow martyrs were Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint and Roger Youderian.)

Jim Elliot on this date, 12/1/1950, is reported to have written in his journal:

“Unwillingness to accept God’s ‘way of escape’ from temptation, frightens me what a rebel yet resides within.”

 Jim Elliot was one of the five American missionaries martyred along the Curaray River, in Ecuador in 1956.  The others were Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint (the pilot), and Roger Youderian.

Jim Elliot – wrote, Jul. 11, 1952

“Teach me, Lord Jesus…not to be hungering for the ‘strange and peculiar’ when the common, ordinary, and regular, rightly taken, will suffice to feed and satisfy the soul.”

 Jim Elliot wrote this 7/11/1952, in his journal.  He, along with Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian were martyred in Ecuador in 1956.

Faith

“Faith makes life so even, gives one such confidence,

that the words of men are as wind.”  – Jim Eliot’s Journal (4/6/1952 entry)

 

Jim Eliot (with Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian) was killed while trying to reach primative peoples for Christ in Eucador.

 

This half century later, we surely need to hear such proclamation again.

“In appreciation of beauty, mountains, music, poetry, knowledge, people, science – even in the tang of an apple – God is there, to reflect the joy of His presence in the believer who will realize God’s purposes in all things.”

Ed McCully said,  

“The life of a missionary calls for infinite adaptability…”

Nate Saint (the pilot) said,  

“When life’s flight is over, and we unload our cargo at the other end, the fellow who got rid of unnecessary weight will have the most valuable cargo to present the Lord.”

Roger Youderian said,
