James Arminius (Ja co’bus Harmensen) was born 10/10/1560 at Oudewater, Holland.  He was an outstanding student who was offered (& refused) a doctorate at age 24.  After being asked to defend a portion of Calvinism his honest heart and learning caused him to question these teachings.  Arminius tried to teach/preach only what could be proved in the Bible.  His thoughts later were dubbed Arminianism. (The Synod of Dort [Calvinist] assembled to condemn the views of Arminius and there defined their 5 points.)

Charles and John Wesley helped spread the Scriptural views of Arminius.
