 THIS DATE

Paul Wood Finch (Sr.) was born 1/27/1910 in Kentucky.  On 6/11/1935 he married Georgia Johnson.  God blessed him with an international ministry: evangelizing Ireland for three years, preaching his way up the continent of Africa mission station to station, leading Holy Land tours, and crossing the Atlantic 40 times.  He shared the platform with Leonard Ravenhill, the late Ian Paisley, and on one occasion preached to James Edwin Orr (who wrote “Search Me O God”).  Finch wrote Revival Messages, and The World’s Greatest Need.  Bro Finch change his old body for a new one 7/8/2003 (1:40 AM) at Holland, MI.

Personal note – I met Bro. Finch in May of ’65, we taught together (him experienced, me, a freshman teacher) at Hobe ‘67-70, and I had him at least three times for meetings when I pastored.  I’ve known several who came from extremely rigid religious backgrounds – many went to the left, not knowing where to stop, not Bro Finch.  He was a balanced man who preached a livable Holiness Message and Lived It!

Finch Quotes:

Sadducees, the liberals of the New Testament, Pharisees the legalistic ones of the New Testament.

Legalist – a carnal man trying to do right.

The good is the enemy of the best (may not be his originally, but he is who I heard say it).

ON-this-DATE

James Edwin Orr died April 22, 1987 at Ridgecrest, North Carolina.

He was in a service where Paul W. Finch preached and thus was at least exposed to holiness (told this personally by PWF).  Though born in Ireland Orr became an ordained an American Baptist minister.  He attended several schools, earning from Oxford a PhD.

He is best remembered by his song “Search Me O God” (w.1936):

Search me, O God,
And know my heart today;
Try me, O Savior,
Know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be
Some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from every sin
And set me free.

Search me, O God,

And know my heart today;
Try me, O Savior,
Know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be
Some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from every sin
And set me free.

I praise Thee, Lord,
For cleansing me from sin;
Fulfill Thy Word,
And make me pure within.
Fill me with fire
Where once I burned with shame;
Grant my desire
To magnify Thy Name.

Lord, take my life,
And make it wholly Thine;
Fill my poor heart
With Thy great love divine.
Take all my will,
My passion, self and pride;
I now surrender, Lord
In me abide.

O Holy Ghost,
Revival comes from Thee;
Send a revival,
Start the work in me.
Thy Word declares
Thou wilt supply our need;
For blessings now,
O Lord, I humbly plead.

James Edwin Orr died this date 4/22/1987.  He was born 1/12/1912 at Belfast, Ireland. Orr was an ordained American Baptist minister by 1940.  Though Orr accumulated an M.A., a Th. D., a Ph.D. and an Ed.D. he will probably be more remembered for one or more of the six hymns he penned, one of which is above.  Never heard him but a dear older friend, Paul W. Finch, years ago preached to an audience in which Orr was seated.

The above was penned in 1936. Orr is said for have written the words at a revival meeting in New Zealand.
