R (Russell) Kelso Carter was born 11/18/1849 at Baltimore, MD. After teaching 22 years he was ordained (1887) into the Methodist ministry & became active in holiness camp meetings. He co-edited Hymns of the Christian Life (1891) with A B Simpson (Christian & Missionary Alliance). Carter was a successful chemistry professor, a sheep rancher, a minister, author, hymn writer, composer, publisher and became a successful doctor. Of his 68 hymn tunes and 52 poems we best remember “Standing on the Promises” for which he wrote both the words and music (1886). He died 8/23/1928 at Catonsville, Maryland.
