Thy kingdom come

*Past Poems Celebrating the Birth of Christ*

Thy Kingdom Come

History has a long line of kings,

Stretching amid the distant hills,

Kings of “states” no grander than towns,

Kings of vast valleys filled with rills,

Some were regents of a small mount,

Some of palm and oasis fount.

We know a few names among them

But many kings of the far past

(Though they had great shining crowns)

Did not make a name that could last.

Gone is their kingdom’s splendid lore,

All is blank that was there before.

Man’s highest castles, reigning strong,

Crumble quite soon to merest dust.

Man’s brightest smiles and yes, sad frowns,

Yield too often to gold or lust,

And the kingdom that seemed so strong,

Has now been forgotten so long,

By a happy, holy contrast,

There’s the true Kingdom of our God.

It is so broad it has no bounds,

It’s older than the ancient sod,

God’s kingdom is not of this earth,

Though it restrains the whole wide-girth.

God’s Kingdom has the greatest King.

Already His reign is longest.

He, in the past, had victory sounds –

Always will have. He’s the strongest.

Today He “owns” all tomorrows.

His peace will out-last all sorrows.

The world’s greatest King came a Babe,

King He came on Bethlehem morn.

Preserved He was from Herod’s “hounds,”

Later thorns did His brow adorn,

Mockingly soldiers called Him King,

Pilate’s placard said the same thing.

No mortal knows our Kingdom’s size;

Millions have already believed.

When season’s make their sufficient rounds,

Christ, King, will be gladly received.

“Thy Kingdom come” will be fulfilled,

Just as the Triune God has willed.

Friend, are you floundering on earth?

The Kingdom of Christ you may join.

Leave earth’s small games, leave her sad clowns,

Leave her lust of CD and coin.

Christ’s Kingdom will win over all

This “Christmas” hear His loving call.
