Christians, awake, salute the happy morn Whereon the Savior of the world was born. Rise to adore the mystery of love Which hosts of angels chanted from above, With them the joyful tidings first begun Of God incarnate and the virgin’s son.

ON THIS DATE

10/25 is the traditionally understood date of the “October Revolution,” 1917. It involved the capture of the Winter Palace, Petrograd, Russia.  (Date refers to the Julian Calendar – corresponds with November 7 in Gregorian calendar.)

The communists are not all dead but the system (as such) has failed and Believers (used by true Christians to distinguish themselves from Russian Orthodox “christians”) not only survived but grew in the underground and sadly, in prisons.

How are you doing in your Praise Life?  Have you praised God already today for TODAY?  (Many people died in the last 24 hrs.)  Have you praised Him for bacon, eggs, and toast, or cereal, coffee, and donut?  (Many a person has had little-to-nothing to eat in the last day.)   Have you praised the Lord for your “Sunday-go-to-Meet’n-clothes”?  (Many persons have one change of clothing, or even no change.)

Have you praised the Lord for the pew on which you are “parked”?  (Many Christians in the last 24 hrs. have been seated on a floor or a log or a hard backless bench.)  Have you praised Jesus for a hymnal?  (Many hearts sing only from memory OR in what are called “contemporary churches” they have read a “7-11 chorus” off from wall/screen.)

Christians, awake, salute the happy morn
Whereon the Savior of the world was born.
Rise to adore the mystery of love
Which hosts of angels chanted from above,
With them the joyful tidings first begun
Of God incarnate and the virgin’s Son.

Then to the watchful shepherds it was told,
Who heard th’angelic herald’s voice, “Behold,
I bring good tidings of a Savior’s birth
To you and all the nations of the earth;
This day hath God fulfilled His promised Word;
This day is born a Savior, Christ the Lord.”

He spoke; and straightaway the celestial choir
In hymns of joy, unknown before, conspire;
The praises of redeeming love they sang,
And Heav’n’s whole orb with alleluias rang.
God’s highest glory was their anthem still,
Peace on the earth and unto men good will.

To Bethl’hem straight th’enlightened shepherds ran
To see the wonder God had wrought for man
And found, with Joseph and the blessèd maid,
Her Son, the Savior, in a manger laid;
Then to their flocks, still praising God, return,
And their glad hearts with holy rapture burn.

Like Mary let us ponder in our mind
God’s wondrous love in saving lost mankind!
Trace we the Babe, who hath retrieved our loss,
From His poor manger to His bitter cross,
Tread in His steps, assisted by His grace,
Till man’s first heav’nly state again takes place.

Then may we hope, th’angelic hosts among,
To sing, redeemed, a glad triumphal song.
He that was born upon this joyful day
Around us all His glory shall display.
Saved by His love, incessantly we sing
Eternal praise to Heav’n’s almighty King.

John Byrom died this date, 9/26/1763, at Manchester, England where his father had been a linen draper.  Byrom attended King’s School (Chester) and then Cambridge (graduated M.A.) and became a Fellow of Trinity College.

He invented his own system of shorthand and was able to make a living teaching shorthand.  Byrom was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and after his brother’s death inherited the family estates.  This pulled him back to Manchester where he had been born 2/29/1691 (at Old Shambles).  He is said to have frequently visited Cheetham’s Hospital (Manchester) and, further to have written many hymns for the chaps there.  His hymns include the above, “Christians, Awake, Salute the Happy Morn” and “My Spirit Longs for Thee.”

Would you lie with a Russian’s wife?

           Lie to him?

                    Steal from him?

“…I have been among Episcopalians, Congregationalists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists and members of many other denominations, and I have found that no amount of baptismal water can keep the devil out of the hearts and lives of Christians.”
