ON THIS DATE

Oliver Wendell Holmes M.D. died 10/7/1894 at Boston.   Holms published works in the medical field, but is more remembered for his poems: “Old Ironsides,” “The Last Leaf,” and “The Chambered Nautilus.”  Holmes was born 8/29/1809, same year as President Lincoln, but outlived him nearly three decades.                                                                       

And if I should live to be

The last leaf upon the tree

In the spring,

Let them smile, as I do now,

At the old forsaken bough

Personal – Dad lived to be the last of his family, Mom lived to be the last of her family, and I am the last of my family.
